For trainees entering computational neuroscience or NeuroAI from an engineering background, where do you direct them to learn some neuroscience these days? Books, courses, ...?

And no... I'm not interested in scaring them off with Kandel!

Honored that a piece I wrote made it to NYTimes. It’s about how my mom’s stroke changed my connection to time, science, and nature. What a privilege to honor my mom in Modern Love.

A neuroscientist studying memory, I used to believe time was linear. Then my mother had a stroke.

Since no one did it, here is a list of people doing research on working memory. The list is admittedly biased (based on the people I follow), so please help: don't hesitate to let me know of someone missing. I will happily follow and add them to the list!

Please RT🙏

Im not sure the Discussion fully delineates its radical implications.

No more...

* Place cells
* Grid cells, splitter cells, border cells
* Mirror neurons
* Reward neurons
* Conflict cells

This list likely reflects mainly my interests and circle, and I’m sure I’ve missed many people, but I gave it a try: (I’ll be slowly editing it until it reaches 150/150)

I made a starter pack for neuroscience folks but I just saw that it’s capped at 150 people. Sorry if I missed anyone! Maybe #neuroscience folks should start making subfield starter packs? 🧪

For so many, there was a book - often read ~20yo - that had a very big influence on their next steps. Do you have a book story like that? Do tell!

My book was Crick's "Astonishing Hypothesis". I got to feature my 30yo tattered copy in a recent photo shoot.

I've created an initial Grumpy Machine Learners starter park. If you think you're grumpy and you "do machine learning", nominate yourself. If you're on the list, but don't think you are grumpy, then take a look in the mirror.

High-level visual prediction errors in early visual cortex!

In collaboration with @timkietzmann.bsky.social and @predictivebrain.bsky.social we explored what type of surprise drives the enhanced sensory response often observed for surprising inputs.

Summary 🧵 below
High-level visual prediction errors in early visual cortex
Surprising sensory input triggers stronger neural activity than expected input, but at which level of the cortical hierarchy are these predictions made? This study shows that prediction errors are com...
