You are ABSOLUTELY NOT going to regret listening to this bird:
A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

How many of these hundreds of thousands of people were actually in significant pain, and had already tried to get treatment elsewhere?

How many had gotten lost in the toils of GP online systems that make you answer 10 or 15 irrelevant questions before asking what's actually wrong?

People have NO IDEA how much of what they think is "normal human behaviour" comes from an experiment someone ran on a dozen psych students in 1974 for a $5 reward, and could never actually replicate, but managed to get the results into a textbook anyway.

Basically, this proposes that magistrates’ decisions on matter of factual guilt will be un-appealable.

So the vast majority of criminal convictions will result from unchallengeable panels of semi-professionals…
This does seem pretty much guaranteed, especially combined with increased use of magistrates, to risk fundamentally restricting people's rights. I am genuinely confused how it is getting so little attention, unless I have seriously missed something.

Transphobes can afford to march across the country threatening to sue every institution they meet into submission.

Parents of trans children daren't raise their heads for fear of a deluge of abuse and threats.

Is this justice? Is this liberty?

So, happy 50th anniversary to Melody Maker’s review of Bohemian Rhapsody: “Queen, with a suitably baroque vocal orchestration, contrive to approximate the demented fury of the Balham Amateur Operatic Society performing The Pirates of Penzance”

Every case study like this should be balanced by one such as a 15-year-old with suicidal ideation unable to receive any help because CAMHS has been cut to virtual non-existence.
Huge respect to the papers for finding both an 88 year old worried about the tax bill on her 6 bedroom Kensington house and a 20 year old fretting about only being able to save £12k a year tax free.
Top work all around. These are not easy case studies to find.

Born on this day in 1819, George Eliot. Here's my favourite bit from the greatest English novel - Eliot's concluding paean to Middlemarch's heroine, Dorothea (who, among other things worked to improve the housing of the local agricultural labourers). Here's to all the Dorotheas, past and present.
