Whatever one thinks of the attack on Venezuela, you have to admire the skill and strategic precision of the military forces that stormed Madura's fortress and so effectively removed the Epstein Files from the headlines.

We need to be honest with ourselves and our leaders about Venezuela

We are a rogue state, a global pariah

Trump is ruling as a dictator, period

An axis of evil wants to carve up small, resource-rich nations

The message for 2026 is clear: No kings!

Trump's illegal war on Venezuela cemented his claim to dictatorship and marked the U.S. as a global pariah.

There are too many great books to recommend in re the way this dynamic has worked in the US. @kmtani.bsky.social, Michael Katz, @larryglickman.bsky.social, Elizabeth Hinton, etc.

But Tom Medvetz’s 2012 THINK TANKS IN AMERICA—esp Ch5—is the best way to understand how this para ends up in wapo.

Lots of head scratching about US intervention in Venezuela but increasingly looks part of a broader Trump strategy — neo-royalism. Foreign policy driven not by national interest but those of elites. For broader context check out this piece.

Imagine winning your last 2 elections by 750k votes in a Democratic trifecta state and posting this twaddle
President Trump’s actions today with Venezuela raise more questions than answers. Is America going to be involved in running and stabilizing Venezuela? Today's actions raise many questions about the stability of the region and our policy towards South America.

All depends on what happens next. If they leave it be, as is, who knows? But at least US troops won’t be implicated.

If we put administrators on the ground to try to “run” the place, lord help us. These guys can’t run a small business — let alone a dysfunctional & traumatized country of 30m people.

Back in 2016, I interviewed @markfallon.bsky.social, who predicted (based on his experiences at Guantanamo) that without fully documenting and punishing war-on-terror abuses, the US under Obama had only managed to hit pause on some of its atrocities and was destined to continue as a rogue state.

I think this administration has vastly overestimated the rest of the world's willingness to put up with imperial oil war bullshit right now. I don't think this ends well. No war.

It’s not about drugs. If it was, Trump wouldn’t have pardoned one of the largest narco traffickers in the world last month.

It’s about oil and regime change.

And they need a trial now to pretend that it isn’t. Especially to distract from his sinking under Epstein and skyrocketing healthcare costs.

Im seeing discussions about consultations with congress, authorizations of force etc. I have to say this transcends any of what I would call sub constitutional technicalities. The president has gone to war with a foreign power and, it seems, kidnapped a foreign head of state on the basis of nothing.

This.
Once again, one of the primary reasons we have arrived at this point (completely out-of-control & unconstitutional abuse of executive power to conduct wildly illegal foreign policy) is that no one, including the most senior people involved, went to jail for the rest of their lives for Iran-Contra.

Among the many reasons you don’t kidnap a foreign head of state at gunpoint even if you have the capability, is that it sparks consequences you can neither control nor anticipate.

It’s almost like green energy is the only way forward and a handful of oil barons are doing everything in their power to keep that from happening so they can get even richer at the cost of literally everything else in the world.

one of my recent preoccupations is the visceral hostility the MAGA right has for the histories and traditions of the United States. these are people who spit on the Declaration and salute third-rate European despots!
It's striking that progressives like Tim Walz and Zohran Mamdani evoke the middle American attitude that, "Yes, we can fix these social problems because we're Americans and it's the right thing to do!" While the "America first" right only emulates failed and failing nation-states elsewhere.

so old i remember an entire summer where obama had to distance himself from jeremiah wright. i dont think the msm has ever once asked trump or vance about yarvin.
Curtis Yarvin, JD Vance’s friend & ideological influence, ended 2025 by claiming “only Hitler spoke the truth” about “too many subjects” & “Hitler was a genius.”

Extremism isn’t fringe on the right. Once marginal online extremists like Yarvin are influential at the highest levels of government.
