Surprise: After procrastinating for two months, I finally relaunched my personal website. In my first post, I wrote about shirtless bouldering, a big land acquisition in Montana, and why Goldie is simply the best to ever do it. adamroy.net/the-new-joint/

I'm going to create a science fiction franchise about how it's fine and actually morally uncomplicated to kill robots.

Has anyone ever tried inventing a political pundit who's normal? I think that would be good, and very cool.

I am once again begging everyone to read Soccer in Sun and Shadow by Eduardo Galeano, one of a few truly essential pieces of sportswriting in history.

“The nine most terrifying words in the English language are 'I'm Bernard-Henri Lévy and I'm here to help.'”
The way all of these people convinced themselves that Mamdani is antisemitic is a subject far more worthy of media examination than any of the ‘groupthink on campuses!’ thinkpieces we’ve been subjected to

Very bizarre situation in Japan, which has had so many bear attacks this year that the government has now deployed the military to deal with them.
Japan's Bear Attacks Are So Out of Control, the Country Is Sending In the Army
A least 13 people have been killed and more than 100 people have been attacked by bears in Japan since April.

A lot of people from outside of Colorado are missing this important detail: We had universal free meals already, and have for a couple of years; this measure was about funding them so they could continue.

Immediately reminded of this Onion article, which is accidentally a very trenchant piece of sports commentary. theonion.com/shohei-ohtan...

A professional through and through, M. John Fayhee braved other hikers judgement and his own fear of being carried off, Wallace-and-Gromit-style, by his own robotic pants to bring you this look inside the rise of powered hiking exoskeletons.
Are AI Exoskeletons the Future of Hiking? To Find Out, I Became Robohiker.
A longtime backpacker hits the trail with the help of AI-powered motion assistance and wonders: Will these gadgets change hiking forever?

I hate using the I-word (inspirational), but when I see an old guy doing something cool, I see a very desirable future. On that note, I'm cheering on Greybeard as he tries to become the first person to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail in his 90s.
Inside Dale "Greybeard" Sanders's Quest to Thru-Hike the Appalachian Trail at Age 90
An AT legend hopes to become the first person to thru-hike the trail in their tenth decade—and the man whose record he’s trying to break is along for the ride.

I wake up, chained to the radiator in the newly-remodeled Lincoln bathroom, the crystal chandelier flickering ominously off the marble. A puppet on a tricycle rides up and hands me a solid-gold bone saw.
And now he’s on a posting spree of photos showing the remodeled bathroom. At least half a dozen of these posts so far.

Oh hey, a reason to be hopeful: groves of American chestnut trees have once again become self-reproducing in the wild.

Turned off comments so 12 people don't show up to tell me why this is actually very sad. Be happy, you assholes.

Efforts to restore the American chestnut comprise "one of the most epic conservation stories ever told.”

the stadium stopped selling alcohol seven innings ago. everyone at this game is sober now

If we're going to make up rules to speed the game up we should at least make them more fun. In the 10th the pitcher has to wear boxing gloves. In the 11th they pick a position player's name out of a hat and they're the pitcher now. Starting in the 12th they make the bat 1 inch longer every inning.
imagine being Rob Manfred, watching this intense world series game and saying “this would be so much better if a fake runner had ended the game five innings ago”
