It's been a tough year in a succession of tough years for journalists, so excuse me if I brag a bit: a LOT of people read something I wrote in 2025: adamroy.net/the-best-out...

On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.

The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.

But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.

Tag yourself, I'm "I am languid & bedeviled & hate writing & hate everybody."
Found an additional graphic that gets even more of these quotes together.

I've kept "I hate myself, I hate clover, and I hate bees" pinned above my desk since I first started studying evolutionary biology as an undergraduate. So relatable to get extremely frustrated with your study system.

I'm sorry, it's called the Gordie Howe Bridge?? That wasn't in any of the headlines???
Q: Why has the president changed his mind on the Gordie Howe bridge?

LEAVITT: The fact that Canada will control what crossed the bridge and owns the land on both sides is unacceptable to the president

Fuck you, much of North America.
For much of North America, the last month has been an icy, frozen trudge. But from the right vantage point, it had a certain beauty. See the satellite images.

Really good interview, enjoyed getting lost in it a lot.
Unwinnable subscribers saw an excerpt of this last month, but here's the much, much longer convo I had with Autumn back in December about cultural criticism, my process, and a long, ongoing battle with alienation from my own taste and craft. A little rambly, apologies

We at the @postguild.bsky.social are raising money for the hundreds of journalists the Post just laid off. This goes to the people who are hurting, not the Post. Or if you'd rather, go subscribe to an independent journalist. Support is hugely appreciated.

I expected the cuts would be bad but I'm honestly stunned and sickened seeing how many great journalists the Washington Post just lost. People who nailed huge investigations, documented war zones, exposed horrific crimes, dropped all at once for failures they did not cause.

And many people don't want to, either! I've had to work hard and push for readers, but journalism has been a normal job for me, one with an employer and health insurance and an audience from the get-go. I would not have wanted to do it if the only way to eat was to hustle on my own.
A lot of people cannot just start a paid newsletter or become freelancers to sustain their careers. The sports, metro, and international desks did work that requires *team* resources, like legal checks, documents, access to archives, and long-term beat experience.

Just absolutely gutting news. A layoff like this is bad for the entire industry, not to mention the reading public.
The mass layoffs at the Washington Post feel worse than the ones made during 2020, especially after the ones at NBC News, CBS, and the WSJ. So many smart and experienced people will leave the industry forever.

death by preventable disease is an inevitable and even desired outcome of concentration camps. in every era of concentration camps people have died of typhus, which is a disease of privation and enforced crowding. this illness is intentionally inflicted

The Post losing these journalists would be catastrophic not just for them or the business, but the public at large.
