This, to be clear, goes back literally to the genesis of the word "robot." Rossum's Universal Robots, the work that introduced the word, was all about robots staging a revolution after they got tired of being exploited. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R.U.R.

Really starting to feel like sci-fi did us a disservice by portraying robots as a stand-in for the underclass instead of appliances that someone bolted arms to.

One wrinkle is that bear spray—the first-line and most effective defense against bears in the U.S.—is legal in Japan but more expensive and hard to find. A company there just introduced a domestically-produced version to try to alleviate that.

Bear attacks are still very rare, in Japan or here, and they're highly concentrated in the rural north. But by my back-of-the-envelope math, per-capita they've had roughly 5 times as many fatal attacks as the U.S. this year.

I think it's also worth pointing out that there was no organized campaign against these ballot measures because, understandably, there's no good way to make "stop feeding kids" sound good on a mailer.
