Happy happy pub day to @trinamoyles.bsky.social! I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of BLACK BEAR.
Black Bear by Trina Moyles | Penguin Random House Canada
A dazzling memoir about one woman's coexistence with bears in the boreal forest and a singular meditation on sibling loss.

Oh, wow. I read her Auschwitz memoir "Eva's Story" (which I picked up off the library shelf for obvious reasons) when I was maybe a bit too young. It left a huge impression on me. I had no idea she was still alive.
Eva Schloss, an Auschwitz survivor who dedicated her life to speaking out against prejudice and to preserving the legacy of her stepsister, Anne Frank, died on Saturday in London at 96. trib.al/NZEPlL6

Got my car stuck in deep snow in a remote storage compound where I've never seen another soul at minus-30 on a blizzardy Sunday night and I'm gonna be honest, that's not how I want to go out.

The thing that makes this so chilling for everyone else is that he's pretty much factually correct.

Welcoming January - and an eventual 2026 fire season - with a (trainer) bike ride to the audiobook of @johnvaillant.bsky.social's remarkable FIRE WEATHER. Chapter 1 + 11 kilometres in the bank.

Wild to me that this article calls Firstman's comments "genuinely innocuous." I thought they were really gross.

Do not get me wrong, all book bans are bad, but it makes me extra sad and upset to know that a book as wonderful and important as @malindalo.bsky.social's Last Night at the Telegraph Club was the fourth most-banned book in America in 2025.
The Normalization of Book Banning
PEN America found that 6,870 books bans were enacted during the 2024-25 school year, across 23 states and 87 public school districts.

Unless I’m mistaken, he’s the first human serviette named a member of the Order of Canada.
I am honoured to announce I’ve been appointed as a member to the Order of Canada. Thank you to everyone for the support! I dedicate this to my late Mom who taught me so much about history, local independent media & research. I know that she would be, like me, screaming with joy! #orderofcanada

A real "Wow, Canada Is Small" moment here: the casting director for Heated Rivalry is... Naomi Klein's sister-in-law!

In case you missed it on Boxing Day / over the weekend, I had my last byline of the year. (Also, if Americans could stop saying that Beautiful Bisexual Canadian Francois Arnaud is Pete Buttigieg in hockey gear, I would appreciate it.)

Coming up - somehow! - on six years since my first book, NERVE, launched into an early Covid lockdown, and it's always a pleasant surprise to see it still making the rounds. Lots of other great stuff here, too! Thanks, @thenarwhal.ca!

This was an interesting exercise! I haven't broken it down like this before... Some caveats/context in the next post.

Book income: 16%
Speaking/teaching: 5%
Bylined writing: 24%
My radio gig: 3%
Editing: 14%
Grant money: 23%
Comms contract work: 14%
Awards work: 2%
That good “writers should talk honestly about money” post inspired me to calculate how I made my income this year. I made more from writing than usual, but not enough! (I encourage others to do this and post the results!)

51% book
23% writing
11% teaching
8% speaking
7% consulting/brand work

The last few days did not move the main story forward AT ALL. It's just a guy eating little treats and doing nothing. And so many plot holes. He says, "no more little treats," and then he's eating another little treat in literally the next scene.

Turkey stock simmering on the stove. It's warmed up to a more civilized minus-20s but still a freezing wind and now blowing snow, too. I introduced my wife to Cat Sebastian's work for the first time. Hunkering down with leftovers and cozy vibes for the weekend!
