Long thread: There are two main "defences" I see put forward of Labour which crop up:
1) If you don't vote for Labour you'll get Reform
2) It's all the fault of right wing media painting Labour in a bad light.
The thing is that neither of these are actually a defence of what Labour is doing. 1/23

I agree with Klein on principle that it's bad for democracy to think of your opponents as evil but… what happens when they're actually evil? What happens when all they do is lie, cheat, steal, abuse and kill, and take your good faith as a sign of weakness? Debate your way out of it?

This is precisely the point, BBC. Anyone challenging does not know whether they are challenging someone trans or cis "based on appearance". They just suspect. Based on what? Height? Shoe size? Grooming? Make-up? Clothes?

All women's rights put back decades, by a group of toxic, rich transphobes. 👏🏽

Truly fed up of people saying that the way to prevent a huge drift to the far-right is to keep Labour in govt. Their migration polices ARE far-right populist and make way for worse. Trad politics are done. Lab/Tories are done. The next election will not be fought how we've experienced them to date.

Mourning those murdered by Hamas isn't incompatible with mourning those murdered by the Israeli state.

Demanding that the hostages return isn't incompatible with naming & demanding an end to genocide.

Naming the power imbalance & impact thereof doesn't desecrate those murdered two years ago today.

If scrapping indefinite leave to remain (ILR) entirely, as Reform would do, is racist, according to Labour, what is making ILR twice as difficult, expensive & humiliating to obtain, as Labour are doing?

I think Jonathan is being too polite: this policy is straightforwardly stupid. Other countries will make attractive offers that encourage hard-working, capable, and interesting people to choose them over us, and the UK will be worse off for it. And for what?
Apart from the unnecessary hardship this will inflict on individuals, this will be bad for integration and social cohesion, bad for the economy, and will increase irregular migration.

[And, as @robfordmancs.bsky.social has shown, it's hugely unpopular and out of step with the British public]
Mahmood says she will introduce new conditions for indefinite leave to remain:

Lived here 10 years not 5
Being in work
Not taking a penny in benefits
No criminal record
Giving back to community eg volunteering

And if you're wondering whether someone getting killed is what it will take for the media and political class to come to their senses, I would just remind you that Jo Cox was murdered in a similar moment of demagoguery and hysteria 9 years ago, and if anything things have got far worse since then.
People’s homes are being stormed by far-right groups. The govt. Is saying nothing about how violence like this will not be tolerated. Where is Starmer’s “law and order” now? They’ve no control and we are moments away from someone being killed. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

I don’t want to be too shrill about this but I think the BBC, ITV and Sky have disgraced themselves in their coverage of the anti-refugee protests. A massive failure of judgement. But now we know the next time a progressive protest “isn’t news” that it’s nothing to do with numbers

This is outstanding. God knows what Labour is doing: legitimising the racism that'll be its undoing, losing the coalition which put it in office, trying to secure voters who will never support it, digging its own moral grave.

Ireland has had "sELf iD" for 10 years now and not one single issue that the media, government and anti-trans movement predicted has come to pass. Not one.

If it works in Ireland why would it not work here? No one who opposes it can give a good answer, because the real answer is transphobia
Ten years ago, on this day 15 July, the Irish Oireachtas passed the Gender Recognition Act 2015 (An tAcht um Inscne a Aithint, 2015).
It was a piece of legislation that allowed me to live my life authentically & I'm forever grateful.

I recently heard a high-profile pundit argue that the Trump movement cannot be Fascistic as

-its supporters don't wear uniforms;

-Trump dislikes foreign wars;

-he hasn't tried to amend the Constitution.

It's a dangerously complacent view, that misses the sheer gravity of the current situation. 🧵
