Happy Valentine's Day, especially to anyone who might identify with one of the letters in LGBTQ, particularly the day after someone Trumpy stripped the letter T and then the letter Q from the National Park Service website for Stonewall in New York City.

Elon Musk gave two Nazi salutes from behind the presidential seal. He wants you to know that he intended them as unambiguous Nazi salutes, and that there's nothing you can do when he denies that. Neo-Nazi groups recognize the fascist signal and cheer. Anyone who tells you otherwise is gaslighting.

And yeah if you're interested the Roman salute was not used by the Romans, it was invented by artists depicting classical scenes, was adopted by the Italian fascists (who themselves had a very poor grasp of history) and went via them into use by the Nazis. So it's all the same thing.

Historian of fascism here. It was a Nazi salute and a very belligerent one too.

A report from Bloomberg shows the Dáil to be the "worst for gender diversity in western Europe".

44 out of 174 seats won by women.

246 women, the highest number ever, registered to run.

4 out of 11 running in Dún Laoghaire were women: 1 Lab, 1 FG, 1 Aontu, 1 NP

Every time I read about banning books, I think of this:

Reading a book with a gay character will not make you gay any more than reading a book about Einstein will make you a genius.
If you're afraid that books might change someone's thinking, you're not afraid of books — you're afraid of thinking.

#GE24 - if you are registered to vote, you don’t need to bring your polling card with you, just bring any valid form of ID. To repeat: YOU DON’T NEED A POLLING CARD TO VOTE.

This what I tell my kids. You can always come home. Doesn’t matter what you’ve done or what’s gone wrong. Come home. And where is home? Me. Wherever I am. That’s home.

✨Little reminder that Aontu exists because Peadar Tóibín resigned from Sinn Fein because of its support for Repeal. They want to seriously curtail women’s access to abortion, and would overturn repeal if they could.✨

It's fall, so everyone is flipping the bird and taking to blue skies for a better climate.

We need a name for this movement for the history books.

It’s not an echo chamber we just don’t accept hate speech and shitty right wing media. It’s really interesting to see how hard the pundit class is trying to claim that if you don’t accept far right and increasingly fascist viewpoint, you live in an echo chamber. This is a demonstrable lie.

Now that we’re here, and the angry people are on X and the dancing people are on insta, and we’re all finding a place; wouldn’t it be nice if there was a peaceful garden somewhere, just for the sexy lady bot accounts, where they could finally rest.

Definite vibe for the day
My word of the day (and personal recommendation) is ‘snerdling’ (18th century): nestling cosily beneath the covers and holding off the day a little longer.

Morning.

Daughter tells me she heard today that if you wear a band T-shirt (especially as a young woman) and a man says to you “name five of their songs”, the correct response is “name five women who trust you”, so I pass this on in case any of you need it
