The person who knew me best is gone and often it feels like I now live around a lot of (friendly) strangers, many of whom I love but don’t know me.

i just read something about grief from C.S. Lewis and his book, “A Grief Observed”

basically, when someone you love dies, it isn’t just them that you miss, but the parts of yourself that person brought out of you that can never be brought out again.

i feel that with my dad.

I’m 47…so outside the age bracket for American women who moved abroad.

Yet here I am, a broad abroad.
"In 2025, 40% of women aged 15 to 44 say they would move abroad permanently if they had the opportunity. The current figure is four times higher than the 10% who shared this desire in 2014, when it was generally in line with other age and gender groups."
Record Numbers of Younger Women Want to Leave the U.S.
The percentage of younger women in the U.S. who express a desire to migrate permanently has surged in the past decade.

True.
It all would have been much easier if, as would have happened if we were remotely a serious country, it all ended with the Access Hollywood interview.

"You're a writer and you can't spell..."

Because storytelling and being a human dictionary are not the same.

Storytelling originated as an oral art form. It is part actor and part musician.

Two art forms that do not require the artist to be excellent at languages or auditory processing.

I teach this to youth writers and the kids always look at me like I've grown another head.

But it works.
Unfortunately I discovered a few years ago that reading a book out loud really helps when you’re doing that last pass and polishing the language.

So if you meet me in the next days and my voice is scratchy, it’s because I am just about to turn in a book.

Woke up to the news that my little YA book won the SALA Youth Award.

I’m a decade too old to be here, apparently.

This is amazing.
Well done, Begley.
I salute you.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

First draft of the third book for the year is complete.

In addition to the following in the same time period:
- 2 horse shows
- 2 night, 3 day motorcycle trip
- And editing 200ish of 700+ photos
- Teaching a couple puppy classes...

I live in an area with a large number of Afrikaans first language speakers. So I rely on Google translate to get the gist of many communications.

In the last few weeks it has told me:

“The child will be caged.”
(Child was grounded.)

“The dog has no ears.”
(The dog is not listening.)
A reminder: AI is a bad translator--it will give you in a pinch the meaning (if it doesn't get hopelessly confused) , but i will not create something that reads like a book.
That's why we have professionals.
(And everyone who's reread ai translations knows that it's faster going to rewrite them)
"Amazon propose une traduction par IA pour les livres Kindle auto-édités"

Bon, je n'en peux plus de soupirer. 🙃

If you aren't seeing skeets from some of your fave people, they might have been labeled "Rude" by bsky mods. Idk what they are thinking, I don't need a mommy to tell me who to be buddies with. Anyway, go into Settings > moderation > bluesky moderation (advanced) and turn Rude off.

Look, I know TikTok and Reels are the THING.

But some of us are not camera-ready in our day-to-day lives.

I pretty much always look like I was dragged backwards through a barn.

Very much not destined for an "on screen" career.

My South African GP had me do this when we thought I might have to visit the US.
ObPeriodicReminder: If you were born before 1982 and don't have conclusive, *documented* proof of getting 2 doses of MMR, get another dose unless it's counterindicated. The second dose wasn't added to the schedule until later and a lot of us never got the catchup dose.
Genuinely begging you to re-up your MMR & get your kids vaccinated if you can. Between this & Kennedy talking about breaking it up into separate vaccines thus providing opportunities for missed inoculations &, thus, increased infections, public health policy is not looking great, for the foreseeable
