The person who knew me best is gone and often it feels like I now live around a lot of (friendly) strangers, many of whom I love but don’t know me.

Woke up to the news that my little YA book won the SALA Youth Award.

When your body isn’t ready for the event but you showed up anyway.

Training shows, bless them, let you finish the course anyway you can and we did. #EDS #Fibro pots, and more…

For anyone curious about the book in question...

(Yes, we are a neurodiverse family. No, Husband and I have not been tested...that's expensive and the kids come first...and at this point...we just are who we are. No, this book is not autobiographical.)

A tale where the local neighbourhood watch and TikTok collide.

This morning, shortly before I was due to go out, these photos were posted on my neighbourhood watch WhatsApp group.

I glance at them and assume people are making bad jokes, because the photos don't make any sense (see alt text) 1/

Ms Renfri’s jumping saddle has been claimed by another.

In 2014, Zukiswa Wanner stepped in when the interviewer for my book launch dropped out. She barely knew me, and helped me out anyway.

She has always looked out for my socially awkward self at literary events. #GlobalSumudFlotilla

Went riding to try to cheer myself up, and Ms Renfri decided to have a freak out which resulted with her head smacking the left side of my face.

Thankfully, I stayed on. But bloody hell, Renfri, the world doesn’t need more drama right now.

Yes, I love him. He’s an utter delight.

But even a year post adoption, it still feels weird that a dog can leave and enter my bedroom whenever he likes unless I lock the door.

The younger one has not acquired the skill…she just gets him when she wants a door opened.

Kind of funny, yet eerie.

People said a lot of shit to me yesterday, but this was the only comment that sliced. I suspect the poster said it as a "gotcha"-as in, "Could you imagine if YOUR parents had ever said something like that to you?"

Thing is, I don't have to imagine it - my parents did, especially my mother.

Because life right now is…well, you know, I offer photos of two of my puppy class students.

Basil is the staffie and Waffels is the mini dachshund. Both are very good boys.

Morning walk included dolphins coming into the bay and (not filmed) two whales or orcas.

Client: Why are you worried about meeting your deadline?

Working with animals pretty much requires you toss all dignity aside.

Take this week’s challenge in Io’s puppy class: put pup into a sit, make pup wait as you dance and make noise, the lead puppy through the instructions.

Ahem.

The world is in chaos but there are still pockets of peace.

Once the main activities were done, the kids worked on a team cheer.

The group near me was struggling, until I jumped in and made a fool out of myself.

Then they relaxed and did great.

Well done to iOceans for putting on such a great event.

The kids were a delight.

For these types of workshops, I tell the kids writing can be done in English or their home language and that spelling and grammar don’t count. That this is about getting ideas down.

That we often loose our best ideas by worrying. But we can fix those details later, after our words are down.

We had some pre-made “stories” with one word blanks to use if a child struggled to read or write.

I only had to use them for one child who reads and writes slower. The kid got super nervous so I offered it to him.

But the rest of the kids managed to do it all on their own.
June 7, 2025 at 1:20 PM
The kids were 10. Their teachers got up at o’dark early to collect them for the event (I was only one of the many stations the kids visited.)

Every kid wrote something.
June 7, 2025 at 1:20 PM
So you take three things (ours were ocean themed) and create a piece from it.

The kids could write a letter to the sea, a sea poem, or sea-themed short story.

(Vid is me during the demo. Each group of kids got to choose the three “sea” things I would link together for an environment sea tale.

Me and my weird eyeball got dressed up for the iOcean event with local school children.

(Don’t worry, you can hardly see the weird eye unless you zoom in.)

We did the 3 things word game…

But a big giveaway is that Loki’s signature style is one ear up and Io never has ears up.
June 6, 2025 at 7:12 AM
The general public thinks these are the same dog.

Loki, on the right, is 10 kg heavier and much further along in the training.

Io, on the left, lost confidence and became very reactive after her ear op. Yet people keep un clipping their dogs to play with her…even AFTER I warn them. Gah.
