Trying to make Bristol modestly and slightly better by enabling more people to cycle and fewer to drive or at least to drive less often.

157 years ago, on the 9th of December 1868, the world's first traffic lights were installed outside the Palace of Westminster in London. It used semaphore arms during the day and green/red gas lamps at night. It had to be operated by a constable. It exploded on January 2nd 1869. #otd #history 🗃️

Ultimately the correct solution to 'some people can't afford essential journeys' is to give those people, specifically, a cash transfer. Don't do a fare freeze, don't do weird things that are just attempts to do social policy, badly, via a clever-clever mechanism.

@mrminiholland.bsky.social They were nuts in 1937!
In 1937 a dual carriageway was built diagonally across Queen Square, in hopes of lessening Bristol’s traffic woes.
At its peak, 20,000 cars were driven across the park daily,
The road was closed in 1992 and all traces of the carriageway were removed by the end of the millennium.

This is a scandal & a disgrace from UK government. In the article linked from below Reeves says "There is nothing pro-consumer about making it harder for people to buy an affordable car for their family. That would be bad for working families." But these largely aren't simply "affordable" cars...

What words remain for a government that goes to court to insist it be allowed to continue selling weapons to a state committing genocide, then sends a letter of complaint when those weapons are used?

This looks successful. Well done @bristolcouncil.bsky.social ! A shame you didn't listen to @bristolcycling.bsky.social back in 2017 so this expensive rebuild could have been avoided but we all learn.
I am pleased to see that the resurfaced and more clearly marked bike lane in Bristol City Centre seems to be working better. We are monitoring it closely to see what further improvements may be needed. @Chris_Boardman @BristolCouncil @BristolCycling

WE DID IT!!!

The government has just announced that it´s scrapping FPTP for mayoral elections.

In May, this absurd system resulted in some Mayors being elected on as little as 25% of the vote.

This is a victory of communities around the country. But it's just the beginning...

If you choose to buy and drive an SUV or "light truck" then you are also choosing to put vulnerable road users, particularly children, at greater risk of death. You can spin it all you want about interior space, driving position or personal safety, but that's what it is.

As I think every time I am forced to travel on a GWR train with my bicycle: why are cyclists expected to put up with such shoddy provision?
A tiny, literal bike hanger, only accessible for people tall and strong enough to get it in, that only fits 1 bike, and causes damage to the rim and spokes.

John Curtice notes on Today that mayoral races could be won with as little as 25% of the vote.

But it's worse than that: if turnout in (eg) the West of England race is the same as in 2001 - 36% - a party might win with 9% of eligible votes.

First Past the Post is an absurdity in these conditions.

These stats from the City of London (aka the square mile) are unbelievable. They’ve already exceeded their 2030 targets. Cycling up 70% since 2017, motor traffic down 34%.

The full report is v interesting - they do proper traffic surveys every 2 years.
Wow! Biggest increase in cycling in the City of London since records began💥

🚲139,000 people cycling a day
⬆️ 50,000 more than 2022
⬆️Cycling up 70% since 2017
⬇️Motor traffic down 34%

Building cycleways is working! Inspo for @citywestminster.bsky.social next door? 😍

As someone who used to live at the southern end and battled heavy traffic to cross on my bike this is glorious, uplifting to see. The world can get better!
Hammersmith Bridge has finally reopened its carriageway to cycling this afternoon!

After *six years* (with a brief interlude in the middle when cyclists were allowed across) of being closed to all traffic, with cycles being pushed across (mostly!) down the narrow footways shared with pedestrians

She now says floating bus stops work extremely well.

Breathtaking.

@rantyhighwayman.bsky.social I had to nick one of your images to prove this point but if the floating bus stop is inherently dangerous because it involves crossing "uncontrolled traffic", then crossing any road anywhere must logically also be - unless you apply motornormativity to the equation.

The new Park Row cycle route in Bristol nearing completion. It looks good; robust wands, clear double yellows, bus stop bypasses, Dutch style right turns.

The moment a Low Traffic Neighbourhood goes in, drivers who want to rat run through your street will start shouting that ‘the old and disabled can’t cycle!!!’.

As Zwolle, Netherlands, clearly shows, segregated cycling and LTNs *increase* freedom for those with mobility issues.

IMHO marginal but this is new and experimental. The test of the Park Row cycle track is whether it really separates bikes from cars; if so people will use it and it will succeed. It looks promising.
I really want to like these new 'cyclist waiting aids' but I think they are a bit pointless, solving a problem that was not there to be solved
Bristol's first cyclist waiting aids installed
Are they the future or just a bit pointless?

At the WECA Mayoral election transport hustings. Not promising; bland, superficial answers. Is there no one serious about improving transport, and reducing car dependency, in our city region?
