426 years ago, on the 17th of February 1600, Giordano Bruno was murdered by the Catholic Church after being found guilty of heresy. He was burned alive at the stake in the Campe de' Fiori with his tongue 'imprisoned'. There is now a monument to him in the exact spot. #otd #history 🗃️

165 years ago, on the 16th of February 1861, Abraham Lincoln stopped in the town of Westfield, New York, on the way to his presidential inauguration to meet 12-year-old Grace Bedell. Bedell had sent Lincoln a letter in 1860 suggesting he should grow a beard to help his election. #otd #history 🗃️

Last year, I posted about Castro.
66 years ago, on the 16th of February 1959, Fidel Castro became the 15th prime minister of Cuba. Batista had fled the country on January 1st of the same year. Castro would continuously hold political office in Cuba until April of 2011, 5 years before his death.

61 years ago, on the 15th of February 1965, Canada adopted the maple leaf flag. The maple leaf was already a Canadian symbol, appearing on the Ontario and Quebec coat of arms since 1868. The current flag beat out two others (one pictured below) in a parliamentary committee vote. #otd #history 🗃️

Last year, I posted about Socrates.
2424 years ago, on the 15th of February 399 BCE, Socrates was convicted for corruption of the youth. As was the custom, the philosopher suggested his own punishment: free food and housing provided by Athens or a fine of 1.25 pounds of silver. This was denied and Socrates was sentenced to death.

896 years ago, on the 14th of February 1130, two Popes were elected following division in the College of Cardinals over the Holy See's Norman vassals. The schism between Anacletus II and Innocent II ended with the former's death in 1138. #otd #history 🗃️

132 years ago, on the 12th of February 1894, anarchist Émile Henry bombed Café Terminus in Paris after having failed to gain access to the Élysée Palace, the Opéra and the Hôtel de Ville. It was one of the first acts of mass terrorism. One person died and 17 were injured. #otd #history 🗃️

2685 years ago, on the 11th of February 660 BCE, the legendary Emperor Jimmu ascended to the Japanese throne according to tradition. Due to this, today is National Foundation Day in Japan as the event is regarded as the mythical founding of the country.

Last year, I posted about the end of the Abbasid Caliphate.
767 years ago, on the 10th of February 1258, the Abbasid Caliph Al-Musta'sim surrendered the city of Baghdad to the Mongols, ending the Abbasid Golden Age. Al-Musta'sim was wrapped in a carpet and trampeled to death by horses because of the Mongol superstition surrounding spilling royal blood.

119 years ago, on the 9th of February 1907, the Mud March, officially the United Procession of Women, took place in London. More than 3000 women marched from Hyde Park Corner to the Strand in support of women's suffrage. It was the largest public demonstration for the cause yet. #otd #history 🗃️

Last year, I posted about the 19th century Roman Republic.
176 years ago, on the 9th of February 1849, the short-lived Roman Republic was established. After political turmoil in the papal states, a triumvirate was formed after the examples from Classical Antiquity. The republic fell to the French army in April of the same year.

132 years ago, on the 7th of February 1894, the Cripple Creel miners' strike began after two mine owners planned to lengthen the workday from 8 to 10 hours without increasing the daily wage. The strike ended on June 12th with a union victory despite state militia interference. #otd #history 🗃️

33 years ago, on the 7th of February 1992, the Maastricht Treaty was signed, founding the European Union. The treaty was signed by the original 12 member states' representatives after which it was ratified by referenda and national parliaments. The treaty entered into force on November 1st, 1993.

206 years ago, on the 6th of February 1820, the first 86 African American migrants sponsored by the American Colonization Society departed for what is now Liberia. The idea for the colony was rooted in the racist belief that free people of colour couldn't integrate into U.S. society. #otd #history 🗃️

331 years ago, on the sixth of February 1694, Dandara dos Palmares died. Dandara was a warrior and part of the Quilombo dos Palmares, a settlement of freed Afro-Brazilians. She died as she refused to return to a life of slavery. Read more: enslaved.org/fullStory/16...
