I know this is anon source gossip, but “what’s the point of standards” is absolutely incredible
“I’ve been hearing that standards will be eliminated or severely cut back. Bari has told people that she wants to get rid of standards and is shocked that they have so much power. She also asked openly, ‘What’s the point of standards?’” one CBS source said.

The reaction of the sports world to the MLB gambling scandal seems weirdly muted. Like, this is the big one. Gambling directly impacting what we see on the field.

Continue to see Schumer’s inability to hold the caucus together in the minority described as incompetence, and idk man. What levers does he actually possess to do that without a majority if there is a real philosophical disagreement within the caucus? My sense is that the answer is “basically none”
I will specifically push back on one thing: much as I think Schumer sucks and needs to go, the modal poster’s mental model of what any Dem Senate Minority Leader can or could do does not strike me as realistic

Having slept on it, still mad about the capitulation
I think a lot of the allegations people are making on here are conspiratorial, and some are kind of nuts, but ultimately, that’s a foreseeable risk that the Cavers were taking with the party’s reputation, and was itself a good reason not to cave!

Assuming some coordination between Dems to provide the minimum necessary votes, not clear why a retiring Senator (Peters) did not take the unpopular vote.

I’m not a genetics expert, but I’ve had to Do My Own Research a lot as the lucky bearer of a hard to diagnose chronic condition, and every single person who believes the race and IQ stuff is literally decades behind on how human genetics work
you have to be a genuine fucking idiot to believe this. there is no plausible genetic mechanism for this, especially if you go looking for "IQ" genes. there are a few genes which if you turn them off make humans gravely intellectually disabled. other than that it's a million point mutations.

I feel like we have the opportunity to turn David Lynch's quote into this moment's "Keep Calm and Carry On" and it's a far better rallying cry too.

Awesome that Watson lived long enough for most people who know who he was to know what a piece of shit he was
As Rosa Parks once supposedly said upon learning of the death of the bus driver from her famous arrest incident: “I’m sure his family will miss him”

I know we’re not gonna be able to go full revenge tour whenever this is over, but there *have* to be consequences for things like this
A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

This also describes certain AI critics. They’re all gonna take a victory lap when the industry hits a downturn, after constantly predicting it was imminent for literally years at this point
No boom goes on forever, predicting it will end in economic pain at some point is not much of a contribution

Back in the day, there were always a small circle of Soviet experts who said "the USSR is about to fall." Every year they were wrong. When the USSR fell, they claimed they were right - which is like saying that you're a great gambler because you bet the same number every day until it came up.
Perhaps it is not as clear as you believe. And the trajectory is definitely going in the wrong direction. So if you don't believe that America has lost it's status as democracy, it may simply be a matter of time.
