It is easier to break things than to build them.
The great thing about Mount Vernon is they take every random thing George Washington shouted at his worker on a Tuesday into a grand proclamation.

This is extremely dumb for a variety of reasons but perhaps the most obvious is that the Romans didn't apply their adoption law to grants of citizenship.

I cannot communicate how basic an error he is making here. Staggeringly elementary, a thing you learn in Roman Civ 101.
I had missed this latest delirium by Adrian Vermeule on birthright citizenship

'Common law?! NAH, it's the Roman law of adoption that should govern the interpretation of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution!'

I always assumed Boxing Day referred to some arcane martial game tradition of the Garter Knights or something. But no, it’s just actual boxes.

Saw a bumper sticker on a Hyundai that said, “I worked 70+ hours a week for 40+ years to afford my privileges. You can too.”

If I worked 10 hours every day for 40 years and was driving a ten-year old Hyundai, I might be bitter too. But the problem isn’t the youngs.

Also, is there a standard explanation for why after the nativity, everyone seems to forget about Jesus for the next 25 years or so?
it's christmas eve so it's time for me to go on and on about my favorite nativity story hobbyhorse, which is that there are two nativity stories in the bible and they very clearly are entirely different from one another

What we need right now is thoughtful and imaginative world-makers, not disrupters.

The mission creep from Schumpeter's "creative destruction" as a dynamic of economic development to "disruption" as a broader assault on societal institutions is a major causal factor in our current problems.

These declines are MASSIVE.

And the comparative silence in media coverage is absolutely DAMNING.

“Why are ppl always so afraid of crime?”

THIS is why. When crime goes up, media trips over itself to report it.

Falls to pre-war (!!) levels? Just CRICKETS.
I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

It's streaming on a Canadian website, but there is no telling for how long.
