Journalists who came up through the ranks, knew their readers names, recognised their faces and understood their concerns 1st hand have historically been the backbone of the press. The right-wing corporatization of media has replaced it w an elite “ruling class” corps utterly out of touch w readers
I can’t claim to be neutral. But I am grateful I wasn’t hired at 19 before graduating college and then plummeted into journalism stardom. I was forced to learn my lessons in a small town newspaper where the audience was small but cared deeply when I made my mistakes — and forced me to confront them

To be clear (since NPR isn't), the "joke" is premised on the fact that Trump is kidnapping people w/o due process and shipping them to offshore concentration slave camps in defiance of court orders, human rights accordances, the U.S. constitution, all tenets of common decency, and international law.

"The most openly corrupt president in US history."
NEWS --> BBC confirms to me that they did edit a line out of historian @rutgerbregman.com's speech. It called Trump "the most openly corrupt president in US history."

BBC also confirms this was done on the advice of lawyers. So Trump's threats worked.

Trump’s Fury at BBC Gets Unnerving Results with Pro-MAGA Edit Stunner
First, British Broadcasting Corporation execs resigned after Trump complained about a segment. Now the BBC edited out a line from a historian that was critical of Trump. Where does this end?

Fair question!

Some current police actions spread harm, increase crime, and cost a lot. Triple bad.

So to start with, we undo all of those things.

1. Get rid of arrest quotas. Immediately convert a number of cops away from "broken windows" policing. AKA racist harassment.
In 2023 Dallas had a police budget of $500 million... but only ~15 homicide detectives? That makes no sense.

Almost everyone in the department that is not a homicide detective, just goes around giving BS tickets and arrests to Black people, ruining lives, ensuring that we won't talk to detectives.🤦🏿‍♂️

Dallas PD has a budget of ~$500 MM, and has 3,000 officers and around 500 civilian workers. They only have ~15 homicide detectives. The other 2,985 officers do a lot of policing of "high crime" neigh...

I will be the first to admit I couldn’t understand why anyone would oppose Assisted Dying… and then I became disabled and had it “offered” to me.

It’s not compassionate when there’s coercion.

It’s not dignified when it’s offered in lieu of care.

Listen to disabled people.

Keep talking about her and the Tulsa Massacre because too many want to pretend like these folks don’t exist or it was a long time ago.

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

This was a key attracting factor to many immigrants to this country—my parents included—because the filtering poorer countries tend to do with their higher education access usually involves money. If you don’t have it, your formal education simply stops after a certain point.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.
