South Dakota has 15 independent bookstores and 2 B&N. 10 years ago they were close to 30. Outside of Rapid City and Sioux Falls you would be hard pressed to find a place where you can bring an author or organise a book club of any kind for any genre, but by all means run down the people who read.
The Phelans ran the only bookstore in Vermillion, South Dakota.
But after the state passed a measure preventing transgender young people like their daughter from using girls’ bathrooms, they sold it and moved away.
