I want to start a running thread of 2025 book recommendations. I post a lot about books over at Instagram (www.instagram.com/morganleighd...) but here are some of the new books I have loved so far this year!
Jane Austen wrote six great books and Mary Shelley wrote one (and I love it way more as a concept than as a novel…). Not hard!

Signed, someone neck-deep in reading a zillion books of Austen criticism to prep for an anniversary piece
You can only pick one. I’m sorry.

Jane Austen or Mary Shelley

it's almost as if you shouldn't and can't negotiate with completely amoral vacuous shitgoblins
In the most predictable development ever, Mike Johnson is not committing to hold a House vote on ACA subsidies

David Szalay won the Booker for his excellent novel Flesh and I am cracking up at his acceptance speech which is a reminder of how carefully prepared movie award speeches are. This man has NOT prepared remarks. He is just free associating on the stage and I assume will remember none of this.

Was in zoom therapy earlier when “I Will Always Love You” began blasting through the wall loud enough that my therapist could hear it. So that was a vibe.

Yep. Don't give up the party apparatus, organization, etc to the Vichy Dems.

Kick THEM out.

They're the ones who suck, not us.
Right, the answer isn't to abandon the party to these weasels.

The answer is to flood the party with people who will take it over and transform it.
Hey, a lot of people are talking about changing affiliation from Democratic to Independent.

Let me tell you why you shouldn’t do that in Colorado.

One of the main ways to get a primary challenge candidate on a ballot is to caucus for your party. You need to be registered as a Dem to caucus.

I received this email about Democrats caving to end the shutdown from one of the SNAP recipients I spoke to:

Amazing that somehow I am able to continue to get more and more mad despite seeming to reach my breaking point of rage. An ominous experiment in pushing the boundaries of human capacity

Millions of Democratic voters on Tuesday: Fight these guys. Fight them.

Senate Democrats: We heard you loud and clear and we will give in

Based on the texts I am getting from my mom rn, yeah the Dems are massively underestimating how utterly enraged this is going to make um everybody.

I was just reading this to distract myself so this feels especially grimly apt
I lay there broad awake, feeling a great deal worse than I have ever done since

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

One (1) senator allowed to remain.

Shutting down the government is a big deal. People have been hurt in big ways as a result of the decision. To have that suffering be for nothing—to re-open the government without actually having protected people’s health insurance and economic well-being—is unconscionable.

They are caving in exchange for the pinky promise of doomed vote in 40 days. They have the political instincts of drywall. This is un-fucking-believable.

So Democrats get:

1. A CR that will prevent the GOP from facing the wrath of Americans for a shutdown over the holidays

2. A coupon for one (1) meaningless ACA vote that will fail

3. An end to the illegal RIF/SNAP moves that are already before the courts

Those all seem like wins for the GOP.

Cannot even cope with thinking about the healthcare stuff (and can’t stop thinking about it) as someone with copious health conditions/disabilities. This is so EVIL

I told my Senators that the message Senate Dems are sending is that if we vote for Democrats resoundingly in an election, they’ll promptly fold.

Is this what they want us to take from this?

So, listen, call Schumer’s office no matter where you live, no matter if you’re registered to vote. Leave a voicemail that says if Senate Dems cave without an ACA premiums fix, you will never vote for or donate to another Senate Democrat as long as he is Leader

Have R senators? (Like me?) Call Schumer’s office to tell him you will never donate to another D senate campaign again as long as he’s Senate leader. Tell him this deal is a shameful joke and a betrayal.

(202) 224-6542
I just did this and if nothing else it was cathartic. I said I would make it my life’s mission to make sure there’s a primary challenger for any D involved in this deal, it’s fucking embarrassing.
