Disney greenlighting THE RISE OF SKYWALKER one of the single worst blockbuster films of my lifetime and passing on this from Soderbergh the god of pop cinema… don’t speak to me
"I always was interested in doing another 'Star Wars,'" says Driver, who starred as Kylo Ren in the trilogy kicked off by "The Force Awakens." "I had been talking about doing another one since 2021. Kathleen (Kennedy) had reached out. I always said: With a great director and a great story, l'd be there in a second. I loved that character and loved playing him." Driver says he took a concept to Soderbergh for a film that would take place after 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker." That movie culminated in Ren's redemption and apparent death. Driver had undertaken the trilogy with an arc in mind for Ren that inverted the journey of Darth Vader. As the trilogy evolved, it didn't play out that way. Driver felt there was unfinished business for Kylo Ren, or as he was known before turning to the Dark Side, Ben Solo. Soderbergh and Rebecca Blunt outlined a story that the group then pitched to Kennedy, Lucasfilm vice president Cary Beck and Lucasfilm chief creative officer Dave Filoni. They were interested, so the filmmakers then pulled in Scott Z. Burns to write a script. Driver calls the result "one of the coolest (expletive) scripts I had ever been a part of." "We presented the script to Lucasfilm. They loved the idea. They totally understood our angle and why we were doing it," Driver says. "We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman and they said no. They didn't see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that." "It was called "The Hunt for Ben Solo' and it was really cool," adds Driver. "But it is no more, so l can finally talk about it." Soderbergh, in a statement, said: "I really enjoyed making the movie in my head. I'm just sorry the fans won't get to see it."

I ran into the story editor in the hallway, who said he was having trouble balancing the narrative because all the Israeli characters seemed evil, while all the Palestinians were angels. A long section that documented, without any editorializing, that Palestinian dispossession was an ongoing process that had begun long before October 7th was whittled down to a single paragraph after a series of fights between the editor-in-chief and the story editor on one side, and myself and the freelance writer on the other.

Aside from Giri's marvelous description of tennis matches, a lot of my favorite stuff in the book was about press access (or the lack thereof), which we talked about a lot. Enjoy!
GN: I think there's this totally flattened version of storytelling in sports right now. There are a lot of reasons for this, including the decline of traditional written journalism and social media being the main platform for these athletes to build their audiences. You basically get these propaganda vehicles, like Netflix docu-series with players having veto power over what goes in and what goes out. These things don't have much shelf life. I think that we will come to a point where sports fans realize that they're missing the stories that they would read or watch from a third-party, independent point of view that's able to be critical where necessary and emotionally sensitive where necessary.

In a memo to staff Tuesday, Guiducci said Vanity Fair will be re-centering its coverage around entertainment, celebrities and culture, along with "money, politics and style." As part of that, the publication will be scaling back certain areas of coverage, including "news aggregation, reviews and trade coverage," Guiducci wrote in the memo, a copy of which was obtained by Variety.

We are in a global moment of eugenics resurgence (call it whatever you like) but I just don’t know how you sleep at night doing this to people.
Just over 370,000 people who currently claim Pips will lose them, while another 430,000 who would have been eligible for the benefit in the future will not now get it. On average these people will lose £4,500 a year. A further 150,000 people will lose their access to carer's allowance - equivalent to one in 10 unpaid carers. The charity Carers UK said they were the "first substantial cuts to carer's allowance in decades" and would cause "huge anxiety for hard-pressed carers and their families who need every penny they can get to pay their bills"

But the most significant measures were changes to the personal independence payment (Pip) criteria, to limit the number of people who can claim it. Under the changes, people who are not able to wash half of their body, or who are unable to cook a meal for themselves will no longer be able to claim Pips unless they have another limiting condition.

Amy E. Greer is an associate at Dratel & Lewis and issues this statement: Last night ICE agents wrongfully arrested Mahmoud Khalil, claiming his student visa was revoked - even though Mahmoud is legal permanent resident (green card) and not in the U.S. on a student visa. Confronted with that fact, the ICE agents detained him anyway. Overnight we filed a habeas corpus petition on Mahmoud's behalf challenging the validity of his arrest and detention. Currently we do not know Mahmoud's precise whereabouts. Initially we were informed this morning that he had been transferred to an ICE facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey. However, when his wife - a U.S. citizen who is eight months' pregnant and was threatened with arrest as well by the ICE agents last night - tried to visit him there today, she was told he is not detained there. We have subsequently received reports that Mahmoud may be transferred as far away as Louisiana. We will vigorously be pursuing Mahmoud's rights in court, and will continue our efforts to right this terrible and inexcusable - and calculated - wrong committed against him. ICE's arrest and detention of Mahmoud follows the U.S. government's open repression of student activism and political speech, specifically targeting students at Columbia University for criticism of Israel's assault on Gaza. The U.S. government has made clear that they will use immigration enforcement as a tool to suppress that speech. Many individuals and organizations have expressed support for Mahmoud and outrage at the government's conduct, and have offered their assistance in the legal proceedings. Mahmoud greatly appreciates all of that support, as do we.

Pretending Covid is no big deal and that LC doesn’t exist allows this kind of bad actor to make a claim like this more persuasively. This is a failure across parties and govts even though obviously these psychos are their own level of evil.

The students and faculty at Omelogor's school are all plausibly obnoxious — a professor grants an undergrad an extension on a paper because his dog has an ear infection; grad students call banking "inherently flawed" but do not know enough about finance to discuss it further. Omelogor's only fleeting friendship in school is a Nigerian conservative who a white South African classmate calls "a Federalist Society asshole," but who, to Omelogor, is the only person "who was not looking for all that was wrong in me." It's an intriguing alliance that Adichie neglects to explore beyond a few paragraphs extolling the conservative's capacity for open debate, so unlike the pugilistic progressives.
