Been reading through a lot of December 1860 news, and I’m gonna tell you now: Abandon the Trump voters. They’re not worth the energy. They will either convert themselves through misery or die for their beliefs.

What exactly do we mean when we accuse a state of genocide?

In Georgia, a mom facing eviction reached out to DFCS for help. They offered her nothing. Soon the agency took her kids away because of "inadequate housing."

The state then paid *$6,200 a month* to house her kids in foster care.

One of the most important and infuriating stories I read this year:
When Families Need Housing, Georgia Will Pay for Foster Care Rather Than Provide Assistance
In more than 700 cases over five years, Georgia reported inadequate housing as the sole reason for taking a child into foster care, a WABE and ProPublica analysis found. Advocates say it would be chea...

Benjamin Lay (1682-1759) was a dwarf with a curved spine and a habit of interrupting Quaker services brandishing a sword, dousing himself in fake blood and declaring that disaster would soon fall on the slave-holders, who held captive people who were in every way their equals.

I had a project in DC many moons ago where we surveyed riders. Low income people were willing to pay double the price if it meant improving the frequency.
New transit study: Service frequency and coverage both drive ridership, but frequency matters more.

Idk why yall are hopeless. Things will be bad, yes, but there is a surge of interest in doing something about it.

If I've learned anything as an aid worker, it's that chaotic moments create opportunities for radical good.

There has never been a better time to build dual power in the US.
I am trying to be patient because I 100% get that people are terrified but I am really struggling with all this knee-jerk public defeatism from other liberals and leftists right now

These guys claim they want a marketplace of ideas. In a real marketplace if people realize you’re selling shit they stop coming to your store and you go out of business. What they really want is to have their ideas subsidized and, like corn, mixed into everything.

To a lot of Americans, everyone who isn’t a white straight cis guy is an “elitist.”

Our culture *unquestionably accepts* it when millionaire MAGA dudes who own car dealerships claim THEY’RE not elite, but librarians who make $30K and listen to NPR
ARE “elite.”

We should stop accepting it.
the trump campaign was literally bought and paid for by the wealthiest people on the planet — openly! — and dim-witted pundits are going on about how voters are tired of "elitist democrats"

Can't agree with this more. See, e.g., the rise in SWAT units in the 60s and 70s, especially in communities where they clearly had little obvious need for them. All that training and equipment can't be wasted, so why not use them to, say, serve warrants? What could go wrong with that?
of course once the build the infrastructure to do mass deportations they aren't going to let it go to waste. they'll find other targets.

People are sleeping on this story. Paxton almost certainly used the prescription drug monitoring program to cast a drag net for all testosterone rxs given to minors. None of the patients in the suit were trans femme. It's mass surveillance of hormone prescriptions, something Genspect has proposed.

Police presence in this situation took a very boring, every-day situation (that shouldn't exist because public transit should be free) and turned it into a deadly encounter. That's the story. Police presence in the subway led directly to four people being shot. Not fare-dodging, police presence.

Don’t mind me, just spiraling about how people are throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at political campaigns and ballot measures while abortion providers are screaming for help
NEW: Abortion funds and clinics, still reeling after funding cuts from pro-choice groups, face yet another obstacle—the end of a program that covered abortions for people traveling from states with bans. The new cuts total $1 million a month, per a source. My first in @thenation.com:
The Perfect Storm Threatening Abortion Access
Funding cuts from pro-choice groups are affecting abortion access at the same time that clinics are seeing more patients in need of expensive procedures not covered by insurance.

Local news tells so many stories about crime because they're reading from the police scanner - local news does not have enough workers anymore to research and report local stories, so they go to the only group that sends them nicely packaged info ready to roll - well funded law enforcement.
Crime is the second most-common topic that Americans see in their local news. And Americans who consume more crime news are more concerned about crime affecting them personally. www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/...
