In America, where irony is dead, a hotel chain uses a policy denying shelter to local people, for fear of accidentally housing homeless persons…

To deny a reservation to the author of a much-lauded book on how American economic unfairness forces working people into homelessness.
A Hampton Inn in Asheville just canceled my family's reservation because our address (incorrectly) showed Asheville—and the hotel bars locals within 50 miles.

When I asked why, they said, "because of our homeless population," adding that most hotels here have similar policies.

This is outrageous.

i think to understand the meaning of the birthright citizenship clause to the framers of the 14th amendment, you have to understand significance of dred scott to the civil war republican party. dred scott wasn't just a bad ruling, it was understood as a rejection of the declaration itself.

One of the things about trust is that it is efficient. It saves you having to invest a lot of time and effort in verification, and if placed in the right places, saves you a lot of pain.

"The diseases will do the education" is what we get when we don't trust.

“Dems moved too far left” means BLM and trans equality—and for some, taking COVID seriously—and many Dem politicians really do support those things.

There’s tons of noise and euphemism, but that’s the core argument.

And it is a misguided one, since Dems won the election after that move, in 2020.

Only one single person — the hero filming — took any sort of action. Everybody else just keeps walking, pretending not to see a screaming woman being dragged away. This is so incredibly Nazi Germany.
I'm shaking almost too hard to type. I entered SLC airport and heard screams and cries for help. I could see people gathered around, watching. I sped over to discover this woman face down on the floor, four grown men pushing her down, while she cried "HELP ME" and pled for her child.

It’s really frustrating to see this hack rage bait from the left. “Officially considering taking up a case” is vapid and meaningless. Please leave the legal commentary and analysis to pros like @chrisgeidner.bsky.social and @stevevladeck.bsky.social
Breaking: The Supreme Court is now officially considering taking up a case overturning same-sex marriage.

This is the first time in history the court has considered rolling back this right.

It’s really not fair to @kenwhite.bsky.social when the Internet conspires to serve up so many bad 1st Amendment takes at the same time as so many bad RICO takes.
Deputy AG Blanche: RICO is available to all kinds of organizations committing crimes and committing wrongful acts… So is it sheer happenstance that individuals show up at a restaurant where the president is trying to enjoy dinner and accost him with vile words?

The truth is most people don’t give a shit about the rule of law, or due process, or laws of war, or freedom of unpopular speech or unpopular religion. Just about every modern civilizational advancement out of barbarism gets only occasional lip service and is unpopular in particular instances.

a pretty good summary of the 21st century is that the humiliation of america's defeats in the middle east post-9/11 curdled into a reactionary politics that seeks affirmation in the humiliation of anyone who is an other: liberals, minorities, the global south, china, europe, whoever.

A little morning Whitman can be good for the soul:

The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life?

Answer.
That you are here—that life exists and identity,
That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.

Mata v. Avianca, Inc. will be in the next edition or supplement of every legal ethics casebook.

Such jaw droppingly bad judgment that I have to hope that Mssrs. Schwartz and LoDuca, are—like the cases they cite—totally bogus.
