This is a superb speech from @zackpolanski.bsky.social

It’s why the #BBC make Question Time, in order to hear different voices, and Zack’s is undoubtedly the strongest in the room here.

No, this is not a “poor pensioner” scrabbling around for pennies…

It's amazing that stories are STILL coming out claiming that Starmer's charm offensive reduced Trump's tariffs.

That's just not true. The SAME simplistic formula was used for EVERY country hit by tariffs.

Each country's tariff was the higher of half the number spat out by the formula, or 10%.
Trump took a VERY bizarre route to work out what tariff to impose on each country.

Instead of calibrating the USA's tariffs against the *actual* tariffs imposed on the USA by its various trading partners, he said "how much tariff would wipe out our trade deficit on paper?" - then charged half that.

Worth taking a moment to read Robert Peston's conceptual analysis of a hypothetical international united front against Trump's tariffs.

The beauty of the idea is that it would punch the US much harder than it can punch the rest of
the world - if sufficient countries signed up.

Food for thought.
