fun historical fact: among the core political forces in the development of mass incarceration was the "Victims' Rights Movement". Its first major legislative national legislative victory was under President Reagan. The prison population doubled under his administration.
An innocent man who committed no crime but is the same race as the person who murdered your daughter should have to spend the rest of his life in a concentration camp is the argument?

I'll add that Trump's entire political strategy is to be seen *defeating* the people and institutions the MAGA base has been trained to hate.

If you fight back and deny him an easy victory, that unsettles his narrative about being an almighty conqueror, which is why he often scurries away.

As I wrote this week, the situation at Harvard deserves attention, not because we should share the mainstream media's obsession with elite education, but because there's a lesson in this for everyone.

He's a paper tiger. Fight back. Watch how he will often back down.

Harvard stands up to Trump — they get that complicity will not save you
Other institutions take note: It's delusional to lie low and hope Trump goes away in four years

There are many reasons to fight back, but a big one: Trump is a paper tiger. Often, fighting back works.

Trump's team backing down in front of Harvard should embolden EVERYONE to stand up to them. Do not comply in advance. Instead say "Fuck you, make me."
Another crucial lesson from this Harvard situation: There is no plan B. Trump's team had no idea what to do if Harvard said "no fuck you."

By first doubling down on the threats and then backing away and lying, they weakened their hand even more! Harvard woudl be wise to say no to the next threat.

Omg yall sobbing after watching a clip of neighbors of all races and ages forming a human chain around a father and son to prevent an ice deportation. In Nashville. I’m struggling with my conviction that people are inherently good these days and seeing stuff like this is so moving.

Protect the most vulnerable, and I'll give you two reasons

1. It's the right thing to do
2. If you don't, you'll be next

I think #1 really OUGHT to be enough for anyone, but if you think it's pie in the sky idealism then just do it for survival. Protect each other, and you protect us all
Ok white citizens, fascism is scary and it’s a new experience for you to feel threatened by the state. I get it. But please let’s not do All Lives Matter 2.0. We have to focus on the most vulnerable & use every shred of privilege if we’re going to survive this.

RFK Jr. says there are no autistic poets, so we interviewed one.

Hear from Elizabeth McClellan, @popelizbet.bsky.social, an award-winning poet, attorney, and legal educator based in Memphis, Tennessee.
RFK Jr. says there aren't autistic poets. We asked an autistic poet.
"I will challenge RFK Jr. to write a poem as good as me any day of the week."

Rough week to be the grocery buyer for a family, I’m not sure if I’m supposed to be shopping to prepare for Easter or for civil unrest. My grocery cart looks totally bonkers.

This makes me think of my question again: is fascism what we call it when white supremacy happens to white people?

Cuz some people already were property.
"the state can just summarily imprison someone without filing charges or holding a trial" doesn't just overturn democracy it overturns 1000 years of common law, like throwing out the entire legal system entirely and saying all people in America are the state's property.
They continue to violate a court order to retrieve someone they illegally deported.

We’re now well beyond a constitutional crisis. If they’re allowed to do this, their secret police can sweep up anyone, for any reason, deport them & refuse to bring them back.

That would be the end of democracy.

Calling a bunch of obscenely wealthy tourists taking a luxury jaunt to the edge of the atmosphere 'the first all-female space mission', fuck off. This isn't a 'mission', it's a gigantic ad for elite space tourism.
A crew of six women, including pop star Katy Perry and Jeff Bezos's fiancé Lauren Sanchez, is set to blast off today on an 11-minute Blue Origin flight.

It marks the first all-female space mission in 60 years — hailed as a breakthrough for gender equality in space tourism.

Pawpaws are in bloom in south central Kansas! They don’t leaf out until the flowers are pretty much done, to make it easier for beetles to find their blossoms.

Yet another way to set back research. Without international attendees at conferences, we can't be on top of the most recent developments in research. Conferences often include unpublished data and papers take years to publish, so this literally setting us back years. 🧪
I just attended a conference in the US. We had one speaker detained and two others turned away at the border.
There are great conferences and science in the US, but with the way things are right now, it’s too risky to attend.

AI is contributing to the need for more computing hardware, which puts a strain on the supply of rare earth minerals, which is why we’re deep sea mining.

So those fake AI videos of deep sea “creatures” are not only bullshit, they are contributing to the destruction of real deep sea ecosystems.
