Wrote a piece for @slate.com explaining that states have a long history of prosecuting federal officers when they allegedly use excessive force. Federal officers are only immune from such prosecutions when they act reasonably in carrying out lawful duties.
Minnesota Could Prosecute the ICE Shooter. Trump Can’t Pardon Him.
Shortly after an ICE officer shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis, city leaders began looking into whether the officer had violated state criminal law.

In most states, the end of open enrollment for 2026 health insurance is next week, on Jan. 15. After that, you won't be able to get coverage or make a plan change without a qualifying event. Here's an overview of states with different deadlines: www.healthinsurance.org/faqs/what-ar...
What are the deadlines for the ACA's open enrollment period?
ACA open enrollment for 2026 coverage runs Nov. 1 – Jan. 15 in most states, but some have different deadlines. Check your state’s ACA enrollment dates.

@zohrankmamdani.bsky.social, could you please establish an official NYC Mayor account on Bluesky and post everything your office is currently posting on X over here?

And please remove all city accounts from X, which has become a CSAM creation and distribution site?

No money for Musk, ever, please.

How is it possible that it just keeps getting worse? How is it possible?
WH sources say Venezuela's opposition leader committed the "ultimate sin": She accepted the Nobel Peace prize.

“If she had turned it down and said, ‘I can’t accept it because it’s Donald Trump’s,’ she’d be the president of Venezuela today,” one said.

The list of this administration's non-compliance/law-breaking of court orders and any rule of law should be posted and reposted every day, so we can't forget. A chart that shows the growth in criminal actions should appear in the corner of every newscast, substack, YouTube, etc. Every day.

This is what I feared. That once again it's Putin.
During Fiona Hill's testimony to Congress on Oct 14, 2019, she described how Trump and Putin discussed exchanging Ukraine for Venezuela. The quid pro quo was if Trump refuses to help Ukraine fight off a Russian invasion, Putin would not help Venezuela (a Russian ally) resist a US takeover.

So I have the cover story in next month's TNR.

I interviewed the heads of police groups; immigration defense attorneys, ex-judges and ex-prosecutors; former DOJ and DHS officials, and the former head of Border Patrol.

They're all horrified at what we've seen, and they all fear what's coming.
Trump’s Immigration Nightmare: It Is Happening Here

This is critically important. Democrats need to pass it if they retake Congress. Trump will veto it. So pass it again. Campaign on it. Given current polling, corruption of the FBI, and the brutality of ICE and BP, there’s no better time to say, “Federal police are not above the law.”
Restoring Bivens rights: one bill "would allow citizens to sue for damages resulting from constitutional violations committed by federal officers," while the other "would create a cause of action against federal law enforcement agencies and police depts for constitutional violations."
These congressmen want to give you the right to sue federal law enforcement for violating your rights
The proposed bills aim to codify a 1971 Supreme Court ruling that allowed individuals to sue the feds for Fourth Amendment violations.

In case you need to hear it from someone who was raised Hindu: Usha is not a hostage, she is an accomplice. She is culpable. Fuck her and the fascists she colludes with. May she go down with all of them. As Zohran ably demonstrates, our communities do not aspire to whiteness & don’t seek to appease.
Vance's latest rant has set off another misguided round of "free Usha" rhetoric. This isn't just inaccurate--she's wholly a part of this fascist project--it's dangerous. We can no longer afford to imagine fascism as smaller than it is. Hindu fascism is vast, too. No religion is immune.

This is exactly accurate to my memory of reading Dreiser 40+ years ago. "Greatest bad writer" I think I've ever read. I still have that copy.
Theodore Dreiser: Greatest bad writer in American history.
(Am Tragedy: Sentence by sentence, ponderous. Cumulatively, in its 800+ page heft, magnificent.)

Can hardly believe that our English teacher, Mathilda Phillips at Redlands High, had us read and discuss the whole thing, chapter by chapter.
In #BookSky news, Boni & Liveright published Theodore Dreiser's magnum opus a century ago today: two volumes, in a slipcase. (Wish this first edition were mine, but it belongs to Baltimore shop Royal Books.) Filmed a quarter century later as the magnificent A PLACE IN THE SUN.
