Now "browsing" means Netflix compiles your recent watch history and feeds you more of the exact same thing. Or Amazon analyzes your buy history and gives you a list of 15 books with basically the same title. You rarely stumble upon something new or different by chance. It's eroding our curiosity.

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

I get it, I still deal with people who hate that Kevin Smith did Jersey Girl which was (gasp) PG13.
I'm saying all this because I watched a review to try to understand why one guy disliked it and it felt like we watched the same movie from two completely different universes. I disagreed with almost everything they said and wondered if they REALLY watched or understood it or where it came from.

This really cuts to the core of how "Why I left The Left" aging Boomers/Xers like Maher end up seeing the world the way they do: Their frame of reference is ENTIRELY their own friend circles, and when THEY wind up on the (slightly) less popular/acceptable side of cultural wedge it blows their mind.
