Keyword: “relevant.” Translation: nothing to see here.

No one should trust the DOJ to decide what counts as relevant. We all know there are millions of unreleased docs.

🚨 The DOJ says it has released all of its “relevant” records on Jeffrey Epstein, but some lawmakers are demanding more.

a lot of people talk about the "AI bubble" as though it means the technology will just go away and stop mattering like NFTs

if it exists it'll be like the dotcom bubble: a lot of overhyped firms will go under but the underlying tech will still go on to affect basically every aspect of society

If you are incapable of realizing that your ideal candidate, your precious favorite political blorbo who you are so excited to vote for, is someone else's "lesser evil" who pulls the lever while gritting their teeth the entire time, then you should not talk about politics. Ever. To anyone.

"Invisible whips directing invisible labor." This really gives the game away. The agent-orati are getting a dopamine hit from the power over automation, docile bodies.

"Reading a novel feels indulgent." As if enriching oneself is a waste. You could be exercising your power over something instead.

I wish SF was 1/100th as "dangerous" as Republicans imagine it is so every one of these AI'bros thusly described was constantly fleeing in terror like George Romero protagonists instead of doing whatever this is
Token Anxiety

i think i mostly echo this for myself. with so much that can be done, i often feel like i *should* be doing something, always

Most of the drop in turnout between Biden and Harris was of white men. Polls before and after the election consistently showed that most "undecided" voters saw Harris as too "left-leaning" on key issues, despite literally every facet of her campaign devoted to countering that narrative.

The heart of this idea idea demands the existance of a voting public that is mildly informed about Gaza, but also has never heard of this...Do-Nald...Trump...and any of his views, on that or on anything, and are making decisions on that.

It's also off how this Holocaust hasn't cost Trump any.

This is an argument I had countless times with my mom in the lead up to the election. She didn't understand why Biden wasn't more popular if the economy was doing great. I told her just because the stock market is up doesn't mean grocery bills are down.
Here's the thing: I am someone whose working-class financial position SUCKED all through Trump I and Biden. I am also smart enough to see that Stancil etc are basically correct that the "working class economy" was *good* and improving under Biden, even if I didn't IMMEDIATELY benefit

HOWEVER...

People felt like things were bad because THINGS WERE BAD.

We were still in the blast-radius of COVID.

This is the other side of the "vibescession" concept: 'Deliverism' doesn't work because you CAN'T just expect that people will see "fixes" and feel good. You have to change MOOD and that's hard

Oh. Oh, no no no. No. No. No, we are not going to debate. Because this is not 2011, or reddit, and I don't think either of us are collegiate atheists auditioning for a Substack editorial position.

Thank you for that laugh, though. I needed it.

I swear to Grodd, it used to be that the HIGH ASK for leftism in this country was for *anyone* to admit that American society was fundamentally racist back at levels of deep systemic rot; and now when you do it you get pushback and: "NO! CONDEMN AND DISOWN THE DEMOCRATS, SPECIFICALLY, INSTEAD!" 🤷‍♂️
Statistically speaking, this isn’t true, but if you feel like letting the Democratic Party off the hook, by all means believe it.
The main reason Trump is in office is racism.

SOME of his voters might also have been feeling some "economic anxiety" (though if they're MAGA trash, they almost certainly deserved it 🤷‍♂️) but if they actually knew/cared about their livelihoods, they'd have voted the opposite.

The better question would be why you're so invested in absolving Trump voters, but I'm guessing I just answered my own question.

Somehow, White America's actions are always everyone else's fault. Fun how that works out.

Like to use a tired metaphor from the food marketing world: It's like selling purified drinking water. They've set down a glass of INDISPUTABLY purity-tested clean water, they have a GIGANTIC binder backing up their test results... but the tester will *always* say it doesn't taste right...

I mean, I agree with the first part. The second part is where I can empathize with the "chart peoples'" frustration; because from their (not incorrect) perspective it's the other guys who're insisting "things are not as they are" 🤷‍♂️

You... DON'T see an even *potentially* racism-adjacent reason why turnout might have dropped between Biden and Harris?

Like... not even one?

... ...SURE you don't wanna take another swing on that?

Look, from where I sit there's two classes of people interacting with what I do professionally: People whose jobs earn well enough that they have commutes, breaks, workouts and "downtime" to watch/listen to 'digital media' ...and the people who MAKE said media, a job that definitely *doesn't* 😂

Right!

Like after Covid a bunch of coffee shops I like shortened their hours and closed in the afternoon.

I, as a consumer, disliked this. I like going to a coffee shop and writing into the early evening.

But it's because worker bargaining power increased.

“What happened to my 24/7 diner?”

Tisha was finally able to tell her boss she didn’t want to work the nightshift anymore and he couldn’t find anyone to replace her so he agreed to close the diner at 11PM so she could go to bed like a normal human being.
