My mistake has been trying to explain what "fascism" is to people who don't care what it is.

So I'm going to try something else. Let's do this as a practical thought exercise.

If America *were* fascist *today* - what would you have to do differently in your daily life? /1

NEW: The Kavanaugh stop, 50 days later. "What a sick world."

I asked Justice Brett Kavanaugh about his September 8 concurrence and the reality that has followed. Because he should be asked. He, unsurprisingly, did not respond.

Horrible violence in Utah. Political violence, if that is the motive, is an aggressive cancer that kills us all.

Political violence disproportionately hurts people with less power, not people with more power. Political violence will disproportionately hurt people of color and women and LGBTQ people. It’s not fair, but that’s the way it works. Celebrating political violence means at best indifference to that.
Political violence is bad. It usually begets more political violence.

Celebrating political violence is bad. It usually encourages more political violence, against various targets.

Campus shootings are bad. They make everyone on campus less safe.

It's bad that what I wrote here is controversial.

A terrorist targeted federal workers last week. There wasn’t much reporting on it. But I’m not finished thinking about it! 🧵

An anti-vaxxer fired more than 500 gunshots into CDC Atlanta, shattering 150 “blast-proof” windows on 6 buildings. Employees were pinned down in terror.

Just a heads up: if we are in fact at war, the authorities Trump has been using — many/most of which are delegated wartime authorities — will only expand and be given more deference by the courts. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

This kind of story is why we need the NYTimes and other institutions like it. Multiple bylines, weeks of work, deep research, important sourcing based on relationships earned over long periods, and, of course, the institutional strength and money to resist any retaliation for it.

THEY HAVE DEPORTED A TWO YEAR OLD CHILD BIRTHRIGHT CITIZEN

This is why I have no patience anymore for people playing games with this stuff.
NEW: A federal judge raised alarm Friday that the Trump administration appeared to have deported a 2-year-old U.S. citizen to Honduras with "no meaningful process" — even as her father was fighting to keep her in the country.
