@mecklemd.bsky.social
Hope to find those I followed elsewhere, but now that I've been on here for a fair bit, am thoroughly enjoying it.
Just saw something really disturbing today. It's supposed to be in the neighborhood of 100° today in Portland, and I saw a good sized dog, locked in a car, in direct sunlight, with the rear window opened maybe a quarter inch. That's not enough!

Not taking anything away from Senator Padilla because he was treated atrociously

But I JUST want to remind everyone that the Congresswoman LaMonica McIver, a Black woman, was just indicted for just asking questions at an ICE detention center in her state

Keep that same energy of support for her

Indeed. "Stephen Frantz, a former head of Reed’s reactor, told me he once attended a conference of research-reactor directors where one lab boss proudly announced that the average age of his operators was just 50. Frantz made his audience’s jaws drop by saying that, at Reed, the average was 20."

I know it's a holiday weekend, but don't forget what (and who) the holiday is for! If you're local to Portland, Fred Meyer grocery workers of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555 are on strike--give them some support if you get the chance!

TIL that as soon as Hitler came to power, Leica, the CAMERA COMPANY, started sending Jewish families for "overseas business trips" to Hong Kong or the US etc. where they received a Leica camera and a stipend until they could find employment. Historians call it the Leica Freedom Train and I'm crying.

Do you ever read The Bugbear Dispatch? One year into the project, I want to know what’s working, what isn’t, and where you’d like to see things go!

While commenting or usually limited to paid subscribers, I’ve got open comments on this first anniversary post

So, for as long as I've known about eye dominance (it's like handedness, left/right except for eyes*) I've been right handed but left eye dominant. While this won't allow me to fly the Apache helicopter (or so I was told) my optometrist mentioned that this is advantageous if you are playing golf 1/?

Back home in PDX from nine days in Japan. I flew out from Osaka at 2045 on the 25th Japan time, and arrived at 2015 on the 25th Pacific Daylight Time. The international date line is weird. My body clock thinks its its currently 1315 on the 26th.
Good thing I got absolutely no sleep on the flights ;)

Hey @altocello.bsky.social remember this book? Pretty sure we both read it back in the day. Sadly, I confess I read the entire series...
The Cross-Time Engineer  (Adventures of Conrad Stargard, volume 1) by Leo Frankowski

A Polish engineer is transported into the past, ten years before the first Mongol invasion of Poland. Luckily for him, his allies include the book's author.
