To everyone with this shitty attitude, you better hope that the people in charge of your care when you become disabled don’t think like this.

We see your maskless selfies at those "protests."

We see you spreading COVID.

We see you making it unsafe for immunocompromised folks (& everyone else).

We see you supporting fascists who ban masks.

We see you fighting for so-called justice while ignoring disabled people.

Long covid made me go from being a fairly competitive rower exercising multiple times a day to a wheelchair user who couldn't walk up the stairs in my own home.

I am doing much better but it has been *years*, and getting sick still floors me in a way it never ever did before. It's no joke.

I just think that if you are going to state definitively that something is not a risk, then you should be able to readily cite at least ONE study that wasn't later retracted as false. or you should have to read ten of the newest papers on how covid fucks you up. vibes will not save you!!

it is not hard to put on a mask in indoor places where you’re not eating. it does not ruin the experience to cover your face for 20 min at trader joe’s. establishing this as a social norm would prevent so much illness. five years in i do not understand why this breaks so many people’s brains

All I can add to the “we reject universal masking” discourse is that it’s not about masks. You aren’t rejecting universal masking, which never happened; you’re rejecting having to think about wearing a mask, and maybe feeling badly about thinking about masks. Can’t help you there.

The mask debate on here is centered around SARS2/COVID (which is still totally not going well) but also misses other parts of what’s going on rn with climate breakdown & a fascist surveillance state. Masking is 100% the future, whether it’s against a novel virus, wildfire smoke, or police cameras.❤️‍🔥😷

Leftists not masking aren’t serious. It betrays there is no strategy towards liberation. It’s short sighted. Can’t do the hard work to resist. Can’t do mutual aid. It’s just vibes, aesthetics, and social capital positioning. Just a quest for power without a plan.

If you don't find our present dire enough to warrant masking, then where is your bar?

Where was it in 2020? 2021? ...2022? .....2023?

When did it shift, & why?

What did you read/who told you something that moved the needle? Does it hold up to scientific or your own moral scrutiny, considering?

Even if someone doesn’t end up in the hospital because they got your sick, they might be forced to miss work when they can’t afford it.

My attitude on this is basically: You don’t know and you’re not following up with everyone you encounter. So suffer the minor inconvenience for the greater good.

even the smartest folks whose takes i otherwise appreciate, who otherwise want to resist fascism themselves & encourage others to, find wearing a mask in, at least, public indoor spaces—to prevent the harms of this administration from impacting others—to be a bridge too far; it’s shameful, frankly.
yeah, i think a commitment to public health obligates you to get vaccinated and, when you are sick, do what you can to avoid spreading that to other people. the demand that one mask at all times in public spaces is, i think, unreasonable.

This this 1000 times this
The framing “it’s unreasonable to ask me to mask” reminds me of climate change discussions - “it’s unreasonable to ask for net zero” etc - bc ppl think of the politics as more “real” than the science. Sometimes things are hard or unfair but reality and science don’t care

Covid has killed tens of millions of people & disabled millions with long COVID. And we don't even know the long term immune damage

Like HIV in the 1980s, the general public's understanding of the harms lags behind science

One depressing thing about 2025 is that no country in the world is treating covid with the seriousness it deserves—e.g. masks in healthcare, air purifiers in classrooms, and Long Covid moonshots. Even the early stand-outs (e.g. New Zealand) seem to have, unfortunately, joined the race to the bottom

A lot of people believe this but don’t wear masks in, at the very least, public indoor spaces despite the ongoing spread of a deadly & disabling airborne virus for which we have few solid treatments and no cures.

Want to resist eugenics? Align your behavior with this reality. Mask up.
i am convinced that these people are death worshippers who want to spread as much disease and sickness as possible (i also think this is all tied up in eugenic beliefs about the “survival of the fittest” www.nytimes.com/2024/12/13/h...
