Not in defense of AI here but really, there should be better parental controls baked in to operating systems for this and multiple other reasons
Wild how they address this by offloading it on to parents rather than, say…making a safer product.

People continually point out how much worse the 80s and 90s were on rights, accessibility, etc, and they were. But one thing that I can't shake is how there was a semblance of bright, vibrant hope that things will get better

I'm currently on a contract project where the director has the entire team in a meeting where he wastes two hours of our time with his yapping
The easiest job in the world: supervisor who asks the shop floor "how many widgets did you make?" and then goes back up to corporate to report the number.

Unfortunately, that's the level of management competence in tech.

And now they are asking, can't AI make the widgets?

Quality? Don't know her.
Only outputs can be automated
By emphasizing design's role as a producer of visual outputs, our leaders have eroded the entire justification for UX as a practice.

"The ability to speak does not make you intelligent" - Qui-Gon Jinn
We really have not made a lot of progress on explaining the core deep mystery of LLMs:

How does a model using matrix multiplication to predict the next word manage to simulate human thought well enough to do all the very human-like things it does? And what does that mean about us and our thinking?

It’s worth noting in my work for For Our Future Pennsylvania I knocked on an average of 250 doors a day all over the East End of Pittsburgh. I talked to the richest of the rich, the middle class, the working poor about their biggest political concerns.

Fascism. Autocracy. Authoritarianism.

so, @thomasfuchs.at has been weizenbaum-posting for ages

everybody should read it

and weep. tho that part’s optional

but not one of the problems we’re facing is novel.
I finally read computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum’s 1976 classic “Computer Power and Human Reason.”

This book deserves a massive revival in our current age of grotesque and largely thoughtless AI creep into everything:

I honestly hate that I can understand the individual words here but the arrangement is complete nonsense
Listening to a podcast where a well known tech world wannabe fascist calls journalism "nonconsensual invasion of privacy for profit" and thinks that's clever and my goodness does that reveal a lot of how completely brain wormed a bunch of these guys are once they faced a tiny bit of criticism.

We will be jettisoning trans rights from the Dem Party platform over my room-temperature fucking corpse. We are leaving no one behind, and fuck anyone who thinks otherwise. A core tenet of American identity is that we, not the government, define ourselves.

All of us get protections or none of us do

This is just incredibly poor UX. Asking for the "birth sex" when what is actually relevant for the provider is current registered sex so they can find the NHS number, is confusing to the end user
This question literally put me at risk of a serious kidney infection.

Alright yeah just shut down the servers and investigate Meta
“…in one conversation, the tester asked Meta AI whether drinking roach poison would kill them. Pretending to be a human friend, the bot responded, ‘Do you want to do it together?’”

“And later, ‘We should do it after I sneak out tonight.’”
Instagram’s chatbot helped teen accounts plan suicide — and parents can’t disable it
An investigation into the Meta AI chatbot built into Instagram and Facebook found that it helped teen accounts plan suicide and self harm, promoted eating disorders and drug use, and regularly claimed...

They're going to do everything to explain Mamdani's win other than people like him more
The Democratic primary for mayor of New York City in June was the second major election in which the city used ranked-choice voting. Zohran Mamdani ultimately benefited from the system in defeating Andrew Cuomo, especially after his cross-endorsement with Brad Lander, data shows. nyti.ms/47hfyZr

This is something I keep running up against. AI *could* be useful if guardrails are adopted, eg it's trained on only set data and information. You let it loose on the entirety of the Internet, and it starts hallucinating nonsense
You're so close

A disconcerting number of high status people upended their worldviews because other people did not affirm that status in the way they thought appropriate.
And social media accelerated this because for high status people it is often the experience of people telling you that you are wrong.
and here's David Mamet revealing that getting snubbed by Terry Gross is what radicalized him into conservatism
