Academic, art historian, obsessed with Scotland, gardening, and books. Spends far too much time in anatomical museums. Will eat cake.
First I had to stockpile Canadian blueberries and maple syrup, and now this?! Guess I'm making a Trader Joe's run this afternoon.

Dolly Parton releases “9 to 5” 45 yrs ago today.

“I knew what it was like to be a working woman trying to make a decent living, trying to be taken seriously. .. I wanted a song that sounded playful on the surface but spoke to that frustration .. A song about women .. saying, ‘We deserve better.’”

This takes me back to the years when the only station we could watch on our black-and-white TV was PBS. (They were good years!) RIP Prunella Scales, you gave us some great laughs!

Iconography matters, mes amis. A useful guide.
Apparently some folks are playing real dumb about skull symbols so let’s play a little game I like to call “Nazi skull or not a Nazi skull”

First up, the Jolly Roger. This is a pirate skull, not a Nazi skull. It means you might get robbed, but prolly not genocided.

With me so far? 1/x

It's 55º degrees out and overcast -- what I like to call "Scottish weather". It's also peak fall color, with red maples everywhere. I'm sipping a cup of Grasshopper tea (mint and vanilla), and today I'm wearing BPAL's Belle Époque (sweet opium, Lily of the Valley, vanilla, mandarin, red sandalwood).

I finished this book two weeks ago, and I am *still* thinking about it. A beautiful meditation on what it means to encounter the natural world on its own terms.

Rocky Horror was my first outlet and introduction into queer culture growing up in ultra-conservative Omaha, Nebraska. It was nothing short of a lifeline for so many of us at the time
The Rocky Horror Picture Show opened on US screens 50 years ago today. Initially a major box office bomb, cult cinema outsiders and queer audiences quickly took up the film’s mantle and turned it into a unique and exciting way of engaging with the movies. Remember kids, don’t dream it—be it!!

Percy Shelley: or the severed head of a tyrant

William Blake: or thicc Satan

Wordsworth: or what???

What a terrible evening to have advanced primary source analysis skills.

As a historian of the 19th century, I *always* appreciate a gilded age reference or two. This is brilliant.

The shooting happened while I was sitting in my classroom with 13 students, a mile away, and we knew nothing about it. My god make this madness stop.
Minnesota is heartbroken.

From the officers responding, to the clergy and teachers providing comfort, to the hospital staff saving lives, we will get through this together.

Hug your kids close.

This is masculinity too
I love this so much and I am absolutely tearing up about it. The gentleness and plainness of this, the way he just lets her be her (and she seems so damn lovely, who wouldn’t?), the generosity.

It isn’t going to solve the world’s problems, but this kind of humanity is a hell of a start.
