Steve isn’t here anymore, but he always posted this picture on Hanukkah so I thought we could carry on his tradition and remember him.
Happy Hanukkah to our friends who celebrate. Rachel Posner, a rabbi’s wife in Kiel, Germany, took this photograph in 1931 -- a potent reminder that fascism must be fought in every generation, even if it's wrapped in an American flag and a red hat.

It’s so cool that every website is just Like This now. We used to send guys to the chair for putting pop-up ads on their sites. Now if I want to read something I have to read single lines between autoplaying video ads that use so much RAM they force the browser to reload every 5 seconds.

"ICE and CBP must be abolished" is the only reasonable position. We can debate the specifics of new agencies for immigration functions, but these agencies are simply too infected with a culture of impunity, racism, and fascism to continue. They're gangs with badges.
Armed ICE agents trapped US citizens in a restaurant and demanded their papers. Federal agents walked into East African restaurants in Cedar-Riverside, MN. They closed and blocked the doors. Then they demanded to see everyone’s papers. Every person present was a US citizen.

What's striking about Trump's lies, and those of his apologists, is that they're not even plausible. They don't try to be plausible. As others have noted, that's kind of the point. True authoritarian control and power is telling a blatant and obvious lie, and showing you can get away with it.
Q: Can you explain what's going on with the bandages on Trump's hand?

LEAVITT: We've given you an explanation. The president is literally constantly shaking hands.

The kids guilted me into walking to the sledding hill with them, but it turns out that snow pants adolescent metabolisms are sufficient in a way that jeans and middle-aged sluggishness are not. I begged off and went home alone. They're living it up out there! 🏂

I've been reading Prisoner of Azkaban to the kids and Avi spent some time last night deciding what he would want to be called if he were magic. His nonbinary alternative to "witch" and "wizard" is "wiz" (I suggested "witchard" but alas). 💫

And there's so much the Trump administration's doing that needs disinfecting.

This is an impeachment offense, and if our press were worth half of a quarter of a shit, it would be all over every single channel, kind of like Joe Biden being a bit slow with a name now and then.
This should be the biggest story in the country right now. The sitting US President was extorting state lawmakers from his own party by threatening to withhold public money if they didn’t gerrymander for him.

I don’t know how else to say it…

My sister is the best. It's a random Thursday, middle of the day, we're both working to pay our respective bills, but I text her out of the blue to shout very loudly about SISTER ACT 2 and she immediately hops on board. Best reason to have two kids, so they grow up to have this in each other.

The "leverage" was starving people
I guess we just have to do whatever Republicans want forever because exercising any amount of leverage might lead to bad things happening during this administration’s tenure
Yes, a much better outcome would have been to keep the government shut down indefinitely while planes fell out of the sky and the economy began to crash, that certainly is a simply scenario that it would be easy to manage

Shutdowns have externalities in "real people really suffering" that this analysis doesn't take in to consideration, and the "leverage" such as the Democrats had was "making the suffering last longer." Even if that was a desirable outcome, there's no mechanism to force party unity to achieve it.
i dont really see why this isnt the case ngl. Governing party generally takes the blame for shutdowns and there was polling showing republicans were taking it. Plus now what leverage do congressional dems have, having given away their last two leverages?

by far the most encouraging thing about the second Trump term has been the extent to which ordinary people, tasked with the execution of the very system of justice this administration wishes to corrupt, have said absolutely the fuck not

our institutions are failing but our people are not
JUST IN: Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Snell just confirmed, at the prodding of U.S. Magistrate Judge Keri Holleb Hotaling, that this motion for dismissal followed a "no bill" from a grand jury.

That means the grand jury refused to indict.
U.S. prosecutors in Chicago are dropping another case tied to Operation Midway Blitz, "without prejudice."

It's USA v. Nathan Griffin. Below is the motion, followed by excerpts from the complaint.

The feds don't say why they're dropping it, but they had until today to secure an indictment.
