There are only 2 real policy responses to a housing shortage. You can either get to work building enough housing for everyone or start making a list of the types of people you want to exclude. I know which side I’m on.

You may have heard that "social security is going to go bankrupt." Many younger people assume social security will not be there for them when they retire. In my latest paper I correct the record. SS is not going bankrupt but we'll need to revisit it soon 🧵

Polling during Biden's Presidency showed that Americans believed unemployment was at *all time highs* when it was actually at all time lows. The media comprehensively and systematically lied to Americans
Despite years of "economic anxiety" discourse, the core drivers of Trump support have always been bigotry and misinformation.

this is a good overview

it seems clear you can craft a position with solid majority support that involves total overhaul of immigration enforcement and staffing, and moving ICE/CBP functions into more functional departments

it's kind of neither here nor there whether you call that "abolishing"
YouGov poll - In the future, would you support or oppose...

Eliminating ICE as a federal agency?
Support 42%
Oppose 45%

Reducing ICE’s size and funding
Support 48%
Oppose 37%

100%, like, I think it would be great if the average person had a more negative opinion of law enforcement in general but the fact is they don't and you're fighting a much smaller front war when you fight "ICE is much worse than other cops" plus it's actually true!

it is a rogue agency. the govt is allowed to disband agencies that are dysfunctional. it happens all the time. immigration enforcement is not going away, but that responsibility can be given to other agencies better suited to the task.
I know it's not mainstream conventional wisdom but I think "Abolish ICE" is a perfectly reasonable response to this and you can get the public to buy in. Most people don't want masked murderous thugs roving their streets

Hot take I've been kicking around; in 2027, a Dem House could simply not invite POTUS to give SOTU in the chamber.

Absorb the "but the norms" backlash, sell it as a co-equal branch reasserting itself. And if a Dem wins WH in 2029, let the tradition stay dead, to deflate the imperial presidency.

But anyway FDR purposely structured social security as a separate payroll tax because "this isn't welfare...I earned it" is a powerful political force. Ultimately though it is an accounting gimmick.

the real doom loop is service cuts to our transit system. if you cut frequency on an already infrequent system, it’s going to hurt ridership, which will lead to more cuts and fare hikes, which further hurt ridership. all of that of course adds future liabilities to the rest of the transport system
