Cheering the two child limit ending isn’t patting Starmer’s Labour on the back or ignoring his record. It’s acknowledging 8 years of hard campaigning and ridding the country of a cruel, toxic policy. Half a million children won’t be hungry anymore. Celebrate today. Tomorrow, pick the next fight.

Cost of extending the fuel duty cut plus cancelled uprating next year: £2.4 billion.

Cost of freezing rail fares next year: £145 million.

Sixteen times more expensive to maintain the fuel duty cut/freeze than to freeze rail fares

Imagine how much fares could be *cut* by ending car fuel subsidies.

Important point on alcohol:

Past cuts in alcohol duty have handed more than £28billion to multinational companies, whilst British families and the NHS bear the consequences of alcohol harm.

Another reason why today's alcohol duty rise in line with inflation is right thing to do.
The UK government has confirmed that alcohol duty rates will be increased in line with inflation, staying the same in real terms.

We welcome this decision.

Scrapping the two-child limit in full is a monumental decision. Well done to all involved in the Child Poverty Strategy, and everyone who has made the case against the policy.

OBR says scrapping costs £3 billion in 2029-30 and will lift 450,000 out of poverty

The difficult political and fiscal choices presented by this week's Budget reflect the economic consequences of failing to protect working-age health.

@davefinch.bsky.social argues that government must focus on the longer term action needed to build a healthier workforce⬇️

Diets evolve faster than we think. In the UK, a long-running survey has tracked what families buy each week since 1940. The latest results reveal massive shifts in just three generations — and debunk the idea that our diets are purely cultural and unchangeable.

Heineken has cut Foster’s ABV to 3.4%, down from 3.7%, explicitly citing alcohol duty rates as the reason.

A clear sign that the UK's strength-based system is working - encouraging producers to make less strong, less harmful drinks. 🍺📉

Proposed changes to alcohol licensing

Growth for whom, and at what cost
Liberalising licensing is not a neutral act. It is a policy decision to prioritise commercial interests and shift any costs to already overstretched health, emergency, and social care systems
Proposed changes to alcohol licensing should make us question whose interests we’re serving in the name of growth

The only time in recent history that the alcohol death rate was consistently falling was during the ‘duty escalator’.

This is no coincidence.

Raising duty rates above inflation would be the best way to save lives quickly.
