On the one hand I remain adamant that computers should try new shapes because there are too many rectangles. On the other hand, we all seem to agree that computer orb is bad. Must find a new computer shape that pleases the people

Sometimes I glance at YouTube and there's a video about Doctor Who, Star Trek, etc., that's like "breaking news! a thing happened!"

And then instead of watching a 30 minute video I go and look for text-based sites that can tell me in three sentences what the thing that happened was.

We should reboot journalism completely. Start from scratch. They should get those old timey hats and a pencil and figure it out from there

I am looking for a full-time job.

Being independent in open source for 3.5+ years has been wonderful. I've gotten done most of the high-level goals I wanted to, and miss having people & structure around me.

If you know of a role for a staff-level TypeScript+web developer, let me know! 🙂

one trend we need to see die is calling everything a “grift” or “scam” just bc you don’t like it or don’t think it’s as good as it ought to be

words have meaning and diluting them to this extent is dangerous

I've been online for a long time, but I don't think I'm ever going to stop being amazed by the number of people on social media platforms who've apparently never interacted with another human before

One of the most important jobs of a designer is understanding that there are some things that everyone says they want, but then absolutely hate if they get it

Even if you're the kind of person who *agrees* that "the future of software development is AI-augmented," you have to see how patently ridiculous this is, right?

Starting a 2025 Q4 thread of not-evil* jobs in tech or using tech skills, which I'll reply to add to as I find new cool things over time

*or minimally evil, as this is often the best we can hope for in these troubled times. Assessments based on nothing but my own vibes

Last year a former colleague told me he listens to a fully AI generated podcast (both text and voices) in order to learn about topics and I'm afraid that this type of person is now in charge of decisions about your software
android chrome has had this "Listen to this page" option for a while, which I found handy. until recently, it read the page text aloud. just tried it now and it instead did "AI playback" alternating voice 1 questions, voice 2 summary replies which aren't the article's text. burn it all to the ground

It's pathetic that the music streaming industry (still) seems to be doing basically nothing to fix the problem of fraudsters impersonating artists and uploading AI slop in their name. Do they really think this is something they can just ignore? What's going on here?

Many of y'all have heard me say this, but my answer for the "within your own lifetime" variant of this question is that I have a detailed and practical plan to time travel back to replace my past self to set up the conditions such that PayPal never achieves success because that fixes SO MUCH
Over drinks with fellow archaeologists at a conference some decades ago, we discussed who we would hypothetically time travel to remove from history. Columbus and Calvin were the two universally chosen. Hitler was nearly unanimous but one person thought removing Goebbles was better.
ALSO. ALSO. Needing us to find Europeans who condemned him for his actions at the time--and there are many! So many! My God so many!--is also some white supremacist bullshit, because the TAINO PEOPLE HE WAS MURDERING CERTAINLY CONDEMNED HIM FOR IT AND THEY WERE HUMAN BEINGS OF HIS TIME TOO.

it's kinda weird that all the software i am expected to use for work are all written by distributed teams, go, python, postgres, linux, chrome, k8s etc

and despite being told "the best teams work in an office together" i don't know of any software i use that's actually written that way
