amazing how many talks at c3, defcon et al boil down to "we looked at the protocol format and it's as though nobody ever thought to do this before"

very amused by the LLM email sent to rich hickey. genuinely hard to pick any other programmer whose specific sense of taste is more diametrically opposed to the type of output LLMs tend to produce

if you think claude could have designed clojure I have a bridge construction kit to sell you

excited to see what LLMs' tendency to emit way more code than is necessary, and failure to generalise from examples, will mean for web page download sizes

today I learned: String.fromCharCode() can stack overflow for completely inscrutable reasons that seem completely unrelated to the stack size of *your* program or the size of the input

this article manages to embed a bunch of unsupportable hype for the technology, frames making it safe as "impossible", and fails to mention the guardian entered a partnership with openai in february www.theguardian.com/technology/2...
‘This will be a stressful job’: Sam Altman offers $555k salary to fill most daunting role in AI
New head of preparedness at OpenAI will face unnerving in-tray amid fears from some experts that AI could ‘turn on us’

realised today I'd never actually seen raiders of the lost ark, very surreal experience watching a film you've already seen referenced to death, which is why you thought you'd already seen it

there a lot of valid reasons for a story to reference something else but a couple recent examples have irritated me by using a reference to just straight-up tell you what the thing is going to do or be about: the ricky jay poster in "wake up dead man" and the "left hand of darkness" ref in pluribus

there's an infuriating bug in google wallet where if a contactless payment fails and you move you phone around to retry it, it will charge a different card to the one you initially selected

- usb drive starts connecting as soon as I start watching dmesg
- office chair stops squeaking as soon as I go to buy wd40

at some point I missed that JS string iteration goes by unicode codepoint so you don't need to deal with surrogate pairs any more

played "year walk" via the simogo legacy collection. really enjoyed the general vibe but found some of the necessary inputs somewhat obtuse on a controller. not helped by guides not making sense because a bunch of content was changed or cut from earlier versions it seems

probably could have figured this out on paper first but turns out zeroing out a 2tb disk over usb2 takes a looong time

clearing out a bunch of old computers and hard drives at the moment; what does it mean if you plug in an external hard drive and it doesn't show up? not just doesn't mount, but doesn't show up in /dev
