"We are a nation of immigrants" used to be a positive, uncontroversial statement embraced across the political spectrum. People coming to become Americans was seen as good.
Racism & politics singled out certain groups through American history, but we're entering uncharted levels of xenophobia.

"Migrant" generally implies someone who moved for better work opportunities or living conditions, as opposed to fleeing violence or political persecution. The problem is all of these people are being vilified by Republicans, & even "immigrant" is becoming a negative term on the right.
