“The vacated homes were substantially cheaper than the new units and spanned diverse locations and housing types.”

When people move into new housing developments, they free up space in older housing. This is good for housing affordability and availability.
Interesting new working paper that studies chains of movers after the construction of a new apartment building in Honolulu.

Paper finds that the project resulted in the opening up other, lower cost, housing on the island, benefiting the housing market overall.

The Labour government after coming in loudly proclaiming that it will squeeze migration numbers to assuage Right wing voters will quickly find itself scrambling to import the skilled migrants that Right wing voters need just like every previous UK government in the last 20 years.

NEW: Data released today shows the Canadian economy returning to normal growth after the massive trade-war hit in Q2, with GDP growing 2.6% annualized in the third quarter

Consumption dropped & investment/government activity were flat though—the entire rebound was in net exports

me: towers are good

them: no, we need nice 4-6 storey, human scale buildings

me: we do! let’s rezone the city so we can get 4-6 storeys everywhere

them: oh no, not like that

Interesting take. But I'm not convinced (yet)
Mark Carney managed to trade a pipeline that will never get built for meaningful progress on industrial carbon pricing and electricity interties — both of which will get more wind and solar built.

Remember when people thought he wasn't good at politics? www.nationalobserver.com/2025/11/27/o...

My take is that the pipeline MOU is a deal with the devil made by a minority government for perceived political advantage.

Will it work? I'm skeptical, but it's possible.

FTR I don't think a pipeline will actually get built, though that doesn't mean damage won't be done.

Huh, I wonder if there were any other parts of the world where increases in state capacity and technological complexity came decades or maybe even centuries before broad increases in input-legitimacy-based state accountability.

What happens when you downzone?

Our new open-access research paper in @findingspress.org investigates effects of decades of downzoning in Chicago.

Findings:
—Downzoned areas added 1/7th of the new units as comparable non-downzoned areas;
—Downzoned areas became more white & were more expensive.
Downzoning Chicago: How Local Land Use Policy Has Reduced Housing Construction and Reinforced Segregation | Published in Findings
By Yonah Freemark, George Kisiel. Downzonings were used by US cities in the postwar period to preserve neighborhood character. These land-use policies were associated with lower housing supply, higher...

For my American followers:

In the "Sliding Doors" like upside down alternative reality that is Australia the Centre Left union normie party passed permitting reform with the Greens. Fossil Lobbyists pushed their luck and got cut out of the deal while the right party imploded.
The Greens, Labor, and the environment all scored a win today — it's a lesson in how politics *should* work
The Greens are clearly still concerned about being seen as uncooperative. Today’s deal is a reminder that this is how things get done.

“Small countries must tiptoe around the sensibilities of big violent nuclear powers or else they’ll get what’s coming to them“ is a bizarre kind of brain worms that often passes itself off as anti-imperialism.

Nearly always said by people from nuclear power bully countries like the US or Russia!
Now consider that if Ireland continues to more aggressively align themselves with western interests (which have a positively amazing record of respecting national sovreignty) what would an opposing power feel the need to do to that subordinate state?
