I remember when STEM drove US pride. The lunar landing proved our missile capabilities. We won the Cold War through innovation. NIH budget doubled. US tech, biotech, & pharma led. Grieving the loss of my country under Trump, the tyrant and traitor. Grieving for people who will be harmed and die.
The Trump administration has terminated $800 million in grants to Johns Hopkins University, spurring the nation’s top spender on research and development to plan layoffs and cancel health projects
Johns Hopkins Plans Staff Layoffs After $800 Million Grant Cuts
Local and international health research efforts are already winding down as the university braces for even more potential cuts.

Always here to be a resource for the #cryoEM community.

It was great introducing what structural biology can do for science and how NYSBC as a service center can support the next generation of scientists. I look forward towards their research journey.

One penny per tax dollar is what science, ALL science in America costs.

I would gladly spend two or even three cents per tax dollar to double or triple what America spends on science.

That is how you make things better, for everyone.

Today would be yet another good day for university presidents to loudly, collectively, & publicly start defending our institutions & industry. The silence is deafening & frankly, incomprehensible. What exactly are you waiting for? How many Columbias, Maines, & Johns Hopkins will it take?
The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

Once again, the heads-down, work the back channels strategy doesn't work. We know this, from a decade in Wisconsin & frontal assaults on higher ed at the state level elsewhere for years now. I don't know why anyone expects it to now suddenly work when the assault are coming from the federal level.
