22nd Probably didn’t help that I read Hammett’s “The Thin Man” in hour-long snatches last thing at night but this New York whodunnit never quite caught alight for me. Contains an impressive amount of drinking though. #BooksOf2025

You honestly can't make this up. There was no way #Brexit was ever going to cut regulation or bureaucracy for exporters to the #EU, large or small, unless we opted to stay in the Single Market and Customs union. Many of us in business repeatedly made that point.

Okay, here are some first reflections on Watson.
Watson's life is a tragedy, really of Shakespearean proportions. He did not, as most bios will tell you, do one great thing when he was young and then collect laurels for it for the next 60 years. His career arc was unlike any in science.

My hokey, hastily thought out opinion on Celebrity Traitors

People shouldn't fear diversity. Not just of race and sexuality though, but of education, skillset, personality type, ambition, financial leverage, cultural taste, sense of humour. Aspiring to monoculture is to waste the richness of life.

Now that he has passed I thought I would share this letter I received in 2013 from James Watson after I wrote to ask whether he or Crick had discussed the DNA work with Franklin following publication of the structure in 1953. Relations were cordial but the matter was not discussed.

Very sad to hear about Jim Watson’s death. If you think he was always a racist you are wrong. He refused to support genes/IQ research in the 70s. He boycotted Greece because of the military coup in 1967 and he called for a boycott of meetings in Chicago after the police riot of 1968. 1/2

How much longer is the @royalsociety.org going to look away from the devastating actions of its honoured fellow, Elon Musk?

Such moral cowardice.

It is both ethically wrong & fundamentally anti-democratic for one man to command this much wealth and power.

States spent centuries trying to tame the power of over-mighty subjects. The rise of the global barons is not compatible with democracy as we've understood it.

Most men don't ever see this because its the water in which they swim. They do not perceive it, and to the extent that they do, they notice the incredibly mild and frankly feckless ways in which it is policed in society, because they are used to more impunity with it. That's all that's happening.

A fellow of the @royalsociety.org bragged about feeding USAID into the woodchipper. The RS says: "We draw on our Fellowship for inspiration to make a positive impact."

I guess the @royalsociety.org now considers the deaths of hundreds of thousands to be a positive impact.

I am not a lawyer, just a historian, but one fundamental problem with the political debate about the EU, especially in English publications is that the whole principle of the acquis communnitaire is not understood or taken seriously. The EU is a framework of rules, not an alliance.

More useful material for the @royalsociety.org’s bio of their esteemed fellow. Though I’m still struggling to understand how a society that claims to value scientific rigour continues to honour someone who spreads so much disinformation.
Vital piece of investigative reporting from Sky. They've uncovered the X algorithm which feeds users extremist right wing material from the moment they join the site. It is a far-right radicalisation engine, by design.

If you consider the outcome of a democratic election to be a loss of sovereignty, then you are the problem.
