If anything, the more challenging the piece, the more fun it is to unravel the puzzle.
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

At events I always insist that I enjoy the daily act of writing, and I'm often met with skepticism. But an activity can be frustrating/challenging and still bring joy. In fact, that's part of it-- like playing a video game on a too-easy difficulty setting, a frictionless existence is not rewarding.

"This fucking sucks" and "all is lost" are two different sentences.

Don't say the second when you mean the first.

all discourse aside, there is one machine with consciousness. it's printers. they are alive and conscious and they hate you and they'd take your arm clean off if you let them. never trust a printer.

You know that repost button on Instagram that's very easy to activate by mistake and doesn't even have a confirmation pop-up? I just think everyone responsible for it deserves a nice weekend in Silent Hill.

Debate is a hobby.

It’s not a thing you do to understand another person.

Listening is a thing you do to understand someone.

New rule. A parent may only propose removing a book from the school library only after reading it in its entirety and delivering a book report to the librarian. Until then no discussion shall be entered into.

Thank you to all you well-meaning solution-oriented people, but I did not ask how I could fix the thing.

I asked why the thing sucked. It is 2025. the thing should not suck.

It turns out romance novels are indeed the best way to get out of a reading slump, after all.

Bought this and read it in two days. The only reason I didn't finish it in one sitting was because I had to wake up early the next day. Really, really can't wait for the second book!

I've neglected sorting new books into folders on the Kindle for a few months now and today I'm paying the price. It's a fine mess.

Bought this immediately based on the pitch and it might be the best fantasy book I've read all year. Started and finished it pretty much in one sitting. It does, in fact, deliver.

this is maybe trite at this point but it is in your interest to find ways to create things. basically everyone wants you to be consuming nonstop. making stuff, from cooking to photography or whatever, can help you feel more in control. doesn’t even have to be something you share with other people

don’t ever give up… you never know when you’ll see a white star twinkling and the beauty of it will smite your heart and hope will return to you and the thought will pierce you that in the end the Shadow is only a small and passing thing and there is light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach
