GENRE FICTION IS GREAT ON ITS OWN AND DOESN'T NEED AN INTERVENTION BECAUSE SOME READERS ARE EMBARRASSED ABOUT LIKING IT.

THANK YOU FOR COMING TO MY TEDTALK

Generative AI is for losers. It’s so embarrassing to watch people debase real artists, the environment, and themselves for a sloppy, rip-off of a party trick.

Wow this makes the toilet frogs I had in Peace Corps seem quaint.
It happened to us in PDX. My wife managed to trap it in our bathroom, and we had a shit covered rat running around our bathroom for an hour until I could get home and murder it.

This is also what my 5th graders do when they come to reading group after recess. (My school building was built in 1924.)

thrilled to inform you that in the proud populist tradition of opera, the family production of magic flute at the met includes papageno counting 1, 2, … 6-7… 3

I’m enjoying it when we have to go to p. 67. I say, “Turn to the page that’s your favorite number,” the students look at me blankly, unable to think of any numbers, & then I say “67” & they all lose their minds bc “Ms. Wise knows about 67?!?”

Like, yeah, I know about it bc YOU are always saying it.
the 6-7 phenomenon is in no way different from any other catchphrase that kids have yelled out at any point in the last hundred years, there's no daylight between that and when i was in high school, the year straight where every guy kept yelling "i'm rick james bitch"

What strikes me over and over again about the reality we are currently creating with so-called “generative AI” is that it’s always pitched as saving human time and effort. But this is only true if you are a parasitic grifter. For anyone with principles, anyone who cares about reality
I mean we are absolutely in a place now where the only solution to this information disorder is for everyone to constantly evaluate the source of information. Never trust a chatbot, but also don't believe a video unless you know and trust where it comes from.

Unfortunately... that's a lot of work.

“AI is clearly sticking around so you have to get used to it” wrong. I don’t have to get used to shit. I am a practiced hater and I can keep this going for decades if I am required to

An ongoing concern of mine is not that GenAI will replace teachers but the technology will - as described in the article - deskill teachers "under the banner of efficiency" while also providing those in power with means to deprofessionalize teachers too.
We can't really say this enough...

> Anastasia Berg [at UCL Irvine] said that new research — and what she's hearing directly from colleagues across various industries — shows that employees who heavily rely on AI are losing core skills at a startling rate.

A philosophy professor warns that AI reliance is weakening workers' judgment, creativity, and problem-solving.

This is what I said about my rolls after they proofed both times. Turns out I can bake bread products, the secret is yeast that’s not dead.

Currently thankful that I discovered that all of our butter is frozen at 9:30 AM and not at any time later than that.

Would be more thankful if I’d discovered this yesterday, but we take what we can get.

(Most of my recipes call for melted butter anyway.)

I want to very gently say something, and I hope nobody will be mad: If somebody on the internet says something that is NOT about politics and NOT about how terrible everything is, it’s a kindness not to reflexively make a comment (in jest or not) that brings it back to those things.

I graduated from what was considered a very good high school in 2004 and I think I read a total of 8 complete works in 4 years, all of which were written by white men, most of whom were deceased at the time.
As a parent, unless your child is with a rouge teacher, chances are they’re reading even less than the bare minimum from your high school English class.

Anyway a great way to radicalize people is for them to realize that you just abandoned their chance at being able to access and afford health care because you didn’t like waiting in line at the airport.
