Was at a Christmas party with a load of clergy last night and as some people were leaving they found a person collapsed on the street outside so the Verger took over and called an ambulance and sent all the clergy away because "if they wake up surrounded by priests that'll just make things worse"

plenty of action up at the allotment right now; fruits are plumping up, the onions & garlic look almost ready, a ton of salad stuff, and the beans are trailing!
the borage & comfrey are also absolute beasts, humming with all different kinds of pollen-drunk bees, bringing lovely colour to the plot 💜

A lot of the “achievements” of western civilization actually kind of suck but one thing that definitely does not suck is how half our children don’t die anymore

Etymology of the day: ‘prevaricate’, meaning to act in an ambiguous or evasive way to conceal the truth or to avoid committing oneself, is from the Latin ‘praevaricari’, meaning to ‘walk crookedly’.

I’m a part time librarian and I just want to echo what I’ve seen other librarians say recently: there is a HUGE uptick in requests for social justice, climate justice, abolition, history, etc books and I just want to say nobody is giving up the fight. If anything people are fighting harder #library

A gay guy, a Black man, and a woman walk into a flight deck— that’s not the beginning of a joke, but just a regular day at work! There was so much DEI on this plane that we could hardly get in the air. Luckily my limp wrists were able to wrestle the heavy jet back to the ground 💅🏼

No, I don't need a bloody copilot for this document, thank you.

Writing is, in no small part, a tool for thinking. If you outsource that element to a machine that cannot think, you shouldn't be surprised if, at the end of the process, neither you nor your reader are any the wiser.

I've got a new long read for you, in which I climb Truro Cathedral, turn into a conspiracy theorist about church spires, and try really hard not to interrupt a Christmas carol concert.

It's packed with pretty pictures and you can read the whole thing here: jayhulmepoet.substack.com/p/truro-cath...

In 1977, Vincent Price starred in a one-man-show where he played openly gay Oscar Wilde; it was condemned by Anita Bryant. When asked about her condemnation, Price replied that Wilde had already written a play about Anita: “A Woman of No Importance”

Dark Matter is the best and worst branding in science. Best because “DARK MATTER” kicks ass, but worst because dark matter physics sounds like it is an /explanation/ for something weird about the universe when actually it is just…something weird about the universe.
