How football joined the crypto con

What happened when football got into crypto? It's a tale of fraudsters, ghostship firms, bogus investments, pyramid schemes, gigantic losses and organised crime.

I don't think I would feel quite so awful about the state of the world if I thought we had a Prime Minister remotely equipped to handle the scale of the challenges we face.

Whenever Kemi Badenoch communicates - whether making a speech, giving an interview or, as here, posting on social media - she always sounds like an office psychopath talking over someone junior in a meeting. She is incapable of not being self-aggrandizing or needlessly confrontational.
Badenoch has a remarkable ability to be rebarbative in any context. The first sentence here is totally unnecessary.

A week on from Barca quietly dropping its crypto partner, and then briefing it had done so without any financial loss, ZKP is still featuring Barca branding prominently.

Which means Barca got no money for the deal *and* will have to use expensive lawyers to clean things up. An economic masterstoke.

Wrote this in 2017 about the Russia 2018 World Cup and reposted it four years later about Qatar. In 2026, only the names have changed.*

Ultimately, nothing makes a difference, but you'll at least know you weren't part of it.

Why it’s time to boycott the World Cup – Fifa corruption, human decency, sponsor weakness and Russia 2018
Sepp Blatter has gone, but Fifa hasn’t changed. His legacy will be on display next summer: a festival of football glorifying one of the world’s most appalling regimes. Enough is enough, it’s time t…

This is quite an important point; if you are a UK citizen with Twitter on your phone, opening it up is like playing Russian roulette that the algorithm might commit a strict liability offence on your behalf.
Has everyone whose scroll the illegal image appeared on also committed an offence by downloading it? This is one of those AI worst case scenarios that ought to make everyone aware of the current direction of travel.

It's not just Musk who should be in jail, it's anyone involved in any service that pornifies images, regardless of the age of the people. The production of non-consensual porn, including for the harassment of women, is quite obviously a major use of these services and everyone involved knows it.

Barca now trying to spin their separation from ZKP as a win because they did it 'without a financial penalty.' More likely, IMO, is ZKP were dropped when they failed to make the first contract payment and Barca realised they'd been had.

Según ha podido saber 'La Vanguardia', el club azulgrana logra romper el vínculo con esta empresa de protocolo criptográfico sin penalizaciones económicas

Last read of the year, but also one of my favourites. It's a travelogue where the author visits and tells the story of the last surviving practitioners of ancient traditions - the guardian of an ancient instrument, the last Inca grass bridge maker - and explains their development and cultural value.

Barcelona has quietly cut ties with ZKP, the crypto partner they signed last month, deleting the announcement from their website and the company's branding from their list of partners.

Tl;dr Something has gone wrong at ZKP, Barca's new crypto sponsors, and both what it claims to be live coin sale transactions and its daily auction price may both turn out to be bogus.
ZKP, Barca's crypto sponsor, claims to auction 200m crypto coins a day.

For most of the last two weeks, the closing price is 0.0004 - about $80,000 of sales a day.

But this randomly chosen 15 seconds of "live transactions" I just recorded shows more than $50,000 of reported sales.

The greatest threat to liberal democracy is not stupidity, it is intellectual dishonesty. There is no point dunking on these people because they know the truth and they have long since conditioned their audience not to require it.
December 26, 2025 at 8:19 PM
An interesting thing about ZKP, Barca's mysterious crypto sponsor, is that they claim to auction off 200,000,000 crypto coins each day (which are locked till 2027, so there's no other trade in the coins) and yet the auction price seems to be the same to *four decimal places* pretty much every day.

Always think that Stevenage sound like an archaic industrial revolution measure of wastage - like the percentage of unfired clay pots that are damaged by being dropped.

Profits up last quarter, but with a regrettable two-point uptick in stevenage.
