Fascinating. And many parallels. Thank you for sharing
You could do some interesting comparing (and contrasting) with the treatment of the Caribbean OTs: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

I think @spinninghugo.bsky.social is basically right about the importance of the ECHR as an international agreement to comply with basic standards.

Not sure it’s a social rights instrument though - at least not primarily
None of the authors of this Policy Exchange Document are the right people to be writing it.

Most critics and defenders (see below, or Sumption's foreword) of the ECHR are making precisely the same mistake about it.

Its justification is nothing to do with UK domestic law.

New Policy Exchange paper: policyexchange.org.uk/wp-content/u....

2 flaws in this argument IMV: 1) in the past (see NI) membership has increased the UK's protection of human rights; 2) a future populist Govt may not be so concerned to protect them, including keeping "robustly independent courts".

Gibraltar’s senior police officer was “in effect… forced out” of his job in 2020 as a result of assertions by the territory’s acting governor and chief minister that they had lost confidence in him, an inquiry by a retired British High Court judge has found. rozenberg.substack.com/p/gibraltar-...

I still find some of this totally extraordinary despite having acted in the case. No exaggeration to say (as many did during the proceedings) that it could be a Netflix series. Except I always thought it sounded too implausible!

The Guardian’s Tom Burgis has reported on the wider context of the upcoming McGrail report.

The report is apparently coming “early next week” but after repeated delays, who knows… the Gibraltar government has already had it for over six weeks.
