More National Book Award-winning writers need to spend the later portion of their careers picking one billionaire and just absolutely going to town.

I want more people to care that SNAP benefits are being cut off on November 1. 40% of SNAP beneficiaries are children. This is callous and vile.

As you cancel streaming services, here is a casual reminder that only 16% of Americans read for pleasure anymore, and your local library has hundreds or thousands of books you haven't read.

They would love to see you stop by and renew your library card.

Here's what you need to do. You need to go to patreon.com/scumbelievable, you need to subscribe, and you need, need, to read Gretchen Felker-Martin's @scumbelievable.bksy.com's obituary for Charlie Kirk. It's the best thing she's ever written.

It’s an absolute shame that DC fired Gretchen Felker- Martin for exercising free speech and then @bsky.app suspended her account. Every writer here should be decrying this because we have to stand up for each other! This is ridiculous.

Just to add to the chorus in my own voice, the banning of @scumbelievable.bsky.social is a travesty. Gretchen Felker-Martin is an acclaimed author and critic whose only seeming violation has been posting fundraisers for people starving to death in Gaza. Return her to the platform now.

I know this is just how appendices are structured but the opinion ending with Uncle Bobby’s Wedding in its entirety did almost make my cry
In her dissent from today's decision—Mahmoud v. Taylor—Justice Sotomayor says that the court's holding "threatens the very essence of public education," and that its "reverberations" will be felt "for generations." This is a very heartfelt and mournful dissent. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

started calling this the “twitter-brained preemptive defense crouch” a couple years back and now I can’t stop seeing it everywhere…feels so insulting as a reader even (especially!) when your politics are broadly aligned with the author’s
I dunno if it is woke or anti-woke, but this trend in art is annoying as hell. You cannot write worrying about your worst, stupidest reader without annoying all of your best readers.
I genuinely think this particular aesthetic trend (Good Art Is Didactic And Also Assumes You Are Very Stupid) is a non-trivial source of anti-woke backlash, like unironically. It is really really annoying, and I think it has provided wedges by which anti-wokes can radicalise nerds.
