”Hyvä” on riittävän hyvä.

i love loanwords i love accents i love pidgins and creoles and translanguaging and dialect continua and i love the squishy humanity of language varieties being pressed together and rubbing off on each other and being not-really-different-things, it makes me feel so connected to humanity

My take, as a deaf linguist, is that signed languages are worthy of study as much as spoken languages are -- but they exist in the bodies of deaf people and shouldn't be fetishized or romanticized. it bothers me when hearies talk about signed languages as exotic objects to access and acquire. 2/n

Kaikilla on kasvun paikka.

Analyysi: Meidän olisi aika myöntää Suomen rasismiongelma ja tehdä sille jotain
Rasismia on vähätelty jo vuosia vaikka se on hälyttävän laaja ilmiö, kirjoittaa kulttuuritoimittaja Iida Rauhalammi.

📢NEW: 'Open' AI systems aren't open. The vague term, combined w frothy AI hype is (mis)shaping policy & practice, assuming 'open source' AI democratizes access & addresses power concentration. It doesn't.

Why ‘open’ AI systems are actually closed, and why this matters - Nature
A review of the literature on artificial intelligence systems to examine openness reveals that open AI systems are actually closed, as they are highly dependent on the resources of a few large corpora...

Bill Labov died this morning. I'm not coherent enough to talk about how important and influential and brilliant he was. I am very sad.

I was so lucky to know him, and I am grateful every day that he (and Gillian, and Walt, etc) built an academic field where kindness is expected.

NEW ZEALAND!

It has been EIGHTEEN MONTHS since Gender Self-ID was made available, and THREE YEARS since the BDMRR Bill passed!

And NOTHING BAD HAS HAPPENED!

Not one case of it being misused or abused.
Every single submission against it was WRONG.

Anti-trans activists NEVER tell the truth.

Being a linguist is inherently political. We know that all language is equal and that being treated differently because of your languaging has to do with the body you inhabit and not the language itself.

1930-luvun tolkun ihmisten puolustukseksi on sanottava, että he eivät välttämättä tienneet, mihin natsien sietäminen ja valtaan nostaminen johtaa.

Tämä nykyinen oikeiston luisuminen natsien syliin on paljon vakavampi asia, koska meillä on kokemusta ja vankkaa tietoa asiasta.

anyone familiar with work on persuasion and bonding in political discourse or the like? :)

What I’m after is some foundational texts on spoken discourse analysis - particularly focusing on bonding, rapport-building and persuasion within conversation (how do we do this/how can we analyse this etc).

Writing is the worst part of the job. I got a C in chem at Ohio State. I've been the only black faculty member in all 3 depts I've worked in. A famous prof. refused to write me a rec letter for grad school & another told me that I wasn't smart enough for computational work.

If I can, you can too!
we need professors that are not naturals at academic writing
we need professors who didn’t have perfect grades
we need professors that went to community college
we need professors that went to non-selective institutions
we need professors that have always struggled to belong
