I was talking to a young person about service industry dynamics. I told her when I was a waiter if a table of three gay guys were my table it would either be the kiki of the week and I would get a 50% tip, or it would be misery for all involved and I would get 0. That's how we are.

This was standard policy when I worked at Whole Foods in 2000-2008.
And we mostly did smile.
But you know what else we had?
We were paid a pretty good wage.
We had excellent insurance.
We had plenty of staff.
We had profit sharing.
We got stock option for long time workers.
We were treated well.
