Cannot recommend this enough. Also very strongly recommend reading All Systems Red if you haven't already!
Still exceptionally relevant, a great 2024 keynote speech by @marthawells.com. On Murderbot, oppression, dubious tropes about robots and AI, pairing humor with impactful commentary, mental and bodily autonomy, neurodivergence, and finding happiness in art and play.

I got sent an RNC survey for some bizarre reason. Reading these questions and considering older people who just watch Fox News all day, makes realize the enormous amount of brainwashing that needs to be undone to bring them back to reality.

This story is bananas.

A couple wrote an e-commerce newsletter. eBay execs didn’t like it. Now eBay is settling criminal charges for sending them a torrent of harassment by mail, including live spiders & cockroaches, a bloody pig mask & a funeral wreath.

Feds charge eBay over employees who sent live spiders and cockroaches to couple; company to pay $3M
Online retailer eBay has agreed to pay a $3 million fine to resolve criminal charges over employees who harassed a Massachusetts couple by sending live spiders, cockroaches and other disturbing items ...

hey so

existing as trans right now means a daily absolute onslaught of legislators (LITERALLY) moving to criminalize our existence

cis people, now more than ever, WE NEED YOU TO SPEAK OUT ABOUT IT

so many cis people ignore *us* but THEY WILL LISTEN TO **YOU**

As a middle-aged woman I would like to propose that all funding is pulled from Torment Nexus projects, and switched to Warm Goo Healing Pod please!
I need tech companies to stop creating things from sci-fi that were cautionary tales and get to work inventing warm goo healing pod

Stuff like this is really important to pay attention to bc it's a reminder that CA is not as unshakeably liberal as many people seem to think it is. The steady push of rhetoric and legislation elsewhere in the country emboldens hateful people here. (Like the M4L scum making bomb threats in Davis!)
LAT ed board comes out swinging against a proposed CA initiative that bans care for trans youth, forces teachers to out trans students, and bans them from bathrooms/sports.

"Voters have a real chance to protect children in the coming months by refusing to sign petitions for this noxious proposal"
Editorial: Want to protect children? Don't sign this trans-bashing petition
California has protected the rights of transgender students for years with few complaints or problems. Now a push for a ballot measure to end that is underway.

Programming is chaotic magic. There are no rules. You ask a game dev “Can the player summon a giant demon that bursts from the ground in an explosion of lava?” and they’ll say “sure, that’s easy” and then you’ll ask “can the player wear a scarf?” and they’ll go “oof”

how we envisioned the dark future: you wear leather and buy brain stims from a small store in an alley. your wrist computer helps you hack

actual dark future: your $89 pants rip after 8 wears. adderall shortage. your wrist computer makes you stand up hourly and buzzes with email from your boss

The video is quite something to watch. The disconnection from reality is astonishing. The behavior is that of a toddler failing to pull off a showstopping move. He didn’t get the reaction he wanted the first time, so he kept repeating it
Everyone's quoting Elon's "Go fuck yourself," but the lines just after it were also something x.com/AlexThomp/st...

This is one of the weirdest and funniest misprints ever, and it’s all the better because it predates digital typesetting. Would love to know WTF happened. Re-skeeting because everyone should see and enjoy this beauty
You occasional reminder that “Fremony at the library” remains the funniest and most comprehensive misprint in the history of the printed word.

I think the fact that we did fix these things and it didn't make it into collective memory is a big part of the apathy toward climate change now. A lot of us remember being warned about all this stuff as kids only for it to go away without much discussion - *because we fixed it*.
we fixed acid rain! we fixed the ozone layer! we beat polio! we’ve rescued scores of species from the brink of extinction! the despair many of us feel about climate change isn’t that it’s too big to fix. it’s that we know it is fixable but we’re being thwarted by greedy ghouls at every turn.
The other day I was like “you know something we heard a lot about as kids was acid rain, why don’t we hear about it anymore”

TURNS OUT we fixed it???
