One of the benefits of a federalist system of govt is that we are protected by both the federal constitution and individual state constitutions.

At a time when the Supreme Court is eliminating so much federal constitutional protection, don't forgot about state constitutions!
An OH court struck down parts of a law banning gender-affirming care for minors. @aliciabannon.bsky.social breaks down this notable ongoing case, which shows how state constitutions can independently protect trans people. For the latest state court news, subscribe: go.statecourtreport.org/subscribe

I hate that ugh-so-noisy big politics overwhelms individual and person-level talk on Bluesky these days. How tf do we get some more regular convos so we can get the connections we need to actually deal with big politics?

I know everyone's leaning hard on the Gilded Age stuff right now but honestly I think we're living in Amy Greenberg's world right now. Maybe even the part where all of these chuds try to invade some country in Central America and die of disease (anti-vaxxers) or starvation (cooking is for women)

That is exactly how proponents of eugenics, historically, have justified their support for eugenics in ideas, policy and law. The common sense application of scientific ideas about "fitness" to social problems.
might get screamed at for this but i really wonder if eugenics is the best analytic for understanding RFK/MAHA. there are eugenic resonances in his speech and platform, and in the movement, but seems more interesting how cryptic eugenic reasoning is still a part of ideological "common sense"

Yesterday in #DisabilityStudies, I asked folks to share favorite self-care practices because so many of us deeply need care right now. These are a few: meal prepping, watching comfort shows, lying on the ground/connecting with the earth, listening to audiobooks, and creating low-sensory spaces.

one of the best COLUMBOs is the one with Johnny Cash who murders his wife, Ida Lupino, in a literal plane crash because she calls him out for being a statutory rapist. And the entire time, you're like, "<gasp> Not Johnny Cash!!"
Partial list of white guy actors that Columbo would know are the murderer immediately:

1. Robert Downey Jr
2. Jason Sudekis
3. Harrison Ford
4. Bryan Cranston
5. Jeremy Allen White

I get why two-factor auth is so in vogue, but GAH! I've been locked out/delayed from accessing so many accounts through the vagaries of 2FA, not to mention how much trouble it has given me to help non-tech people sort this stuff out. Are we sure this is the best we can do?

If there is any intellectual, cultural, of science, legal, or other historian out there who can point out any study reflecting on early modern court records as sources and the reliability/usefulness of the written records of the witnesses' words/mediation of the secretary, I would b forever grateful

In an effort to preserve what little effectiveness I might retain, I've been spending significant time updating my muted words list. (Tbf, a little machine learning sprinkled into mutes would actually be appreciated and even be what I'd consider an actually appropriate use of "AI.")

Musk removed his case to federal court. What does this mean? Can he really just do that? Why didn’t the Philly judge do something about it?

Answer: probably not much, kind of, and he can’t. Allow me to explain.
Elon Musk hasn’t yet shown up in the Philadelphia courtroom where DA Larry Krasner is challenging the legality of his $1 million daily voter-registration giveaway. Late last night, Musk filed paperwork seeking to remove the case to federal court.
Musk a no show at start of court hearing on $1 million voter giveaway
Elon Musk did not show up at a Pennsylvania court hearing on Thursday to consider his $1 million giveaway to voters ahead of the Nov. 5election, which could put him at risk of being held in contempt of court.

I despise the way the legal profession abstracts harms and even facts. And, almost always people.

(Obvs. not all lawyers all of the time. But "the law" is built this way. It's incredibly difficult to overcome these structural issues and attain some type of justice.)
"It is of course frustrating to watch conservative lawyers build successful careers by encouraging the Supreme Court to inflict harm on vulnerable people. It is even more disheartening to watch liberal lawyers do the same, ignoring the consequences for the people and values they care about."
Why Is a Law School Supreme Court Clinic Taking a Straight Rights Case?
Clinical legal education is supposed to serve the public interest. In Ames v. Ohio DYS, it’s pushing the conservative policy agenda instead.

Something(s) I wish folks knew: Accessibility is not a "one and done" practice. Access needs change, and accessibility varies by context & disability. Also, lots of folks have invisible disabilities and/or don't disclose disabilities, so accessibility helps folks who you may not think are disabled!
