Spot on take re: "USian"

It's starting to feel like Fox News in here with all the complaining about other people's woke language.
Every time it crops up it amazes me that some people are apparently so precious about it. It also stands out that, at least of those I’ve seen grousing about it, it’s always white people. Feels like the kind of shit insecure conservatives do.

People from Latin America also regularly use “American” in some form to refer to themselves and to place; in Spanish, the term for people from the U.S. is “Estadounidense” - the English translation of this is in fact USian. It’s unwieldy but not without merit

Another cool paper from Broockman et al. showing people oppose new housing not just because of NIMBY, but because they genuinely don't want others to live near ugly buildings.

I wonder how much of the so-called "cultural" concerns about migration are similarly about aesthetics.
NEW PAPER w/ @cselmendorf.bsky.social & @jkalla.bsky.social:

An under-appreciated reason why voters oppose dense new housing, especially in less-dense neighborhoods: they think it looks ugly and want to prevent that, even in other neighborhoods.

Some of what we think is NIMBYism might not be!

"Stand in the seat" great metaphor, great visual.
Zack Polanski tells the BBC it would be "very tempting" for him to stand in Keir Starmer's seat at the next general election

The middle east used to be full of white people, then Arabs lost their white status, one of few groups to do so.
Yeah you think the Middle East is full of White people.

The Italian "OHHHHhhh!" was made for moments like these.
Like this isn't even close. Someone treats another human like this right next to you, you say something. No job is worth the indignity of having to say you were there and did nothing.

The left self-radicalizing beyond all sense on criminal justice is a legendary gift to the right. And there's absolutely no way to talk them down. All criticism is immediately dismissed on "we'll be attacked no matter what" grounds. That's not a reason be extremely attackable.
During the Obama administration's second term, reduction of federal prison population became a priority and US attorneys began refusing most drug prosections. That was real. It happened. Police reform became a third-rail issue because GOP could tar it with defund. That was real too.

At some point, Trump will be replaced by an AI. He will appear only on video. AI Trump will explain that Soros and Obama hired a bunch of new antifa supersoldiers from Muslim insane asylums, and they're hopped up on super strength Venezuelan fentanyl. As the AI improves, Trump will become more

everyone who keeps freaking out about him running for a third term has not actually watched him on video less than one year into this one
President Trump said it was “too bad” that he couldn’t seek a third presidential term after some allies promoted the idea of him running again in 2028.

This ceasefire is like children playing the "who can be quiet" game.

"Starts now. No, time-out. ... Now."
After a wave of Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip overnight and this morning, the ceasefire will resume at 10 a.m., military sources say.

A balloon is the most sensible way to smuggle helium.
Europe stands in full solidarity with Lithuania in the face of the persistent and incursions of helium smuggling balloons into its airspace.

This is destabilisation.
This is provocation.

We call it by its name: a hybrid threat.
We will not tolerate it.

Make believe is how conservatives solve cognitive dissonance.
I read the transcript. The ad doesn’t misrepresent what he was saying. It’s bizarre for the foundation to claim it did. We can easily see that that’s not true. What is the Reagan Foundation doing here? Showing fealty to Trump for some reason?

If the new Republican Medicaid work requirement applied to congress, they'd lose their health coverage.
This is insane. Republicans aren’t allowing Adelita Grijalva to be sworn in because she will provide the final signature necessary on a discharge petition that would force the House to take a public vote on releasing the Epstein files. Speaker Johnson has shut down the House to protect pedophiles.
